Dare we ask?

Dare we ask?

Can we have our inches back and Fahrenheit as well,
Will you do that for us stalwarts, who really cannot tell,
How many millimetres does one centimetre make,
And very often using these, we make a huge mistake.

Will feet and yards return to use, an old friend of us all,
For if you mention foreign measurements we cannot quite recall,
How many metres make a mile, it gets us most confused,
It’s been so long since a proper understanding has been used.

And please, yes please restore the pint and gallon if you can,
One litre is misleading to this ancient Englishman,
‘A pint glass of your finest ale’, is common most to me,
Not ‘a litre’ with a bit poured out, that causes misery.

Thirty two is freezing point, zero just means nowt,
Seventy’s a hot day, keeps my mind afloat,
Send your decimals away, to where foreign friendships dwell,
Can we have our inches back, – and Fahrenheit as well?

( Please? )
Mick.

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
