Combination

Combination

I have walked on ‘heathered’ hillside, I have walked on ‘fern dressed’ vale,
I have bathed in warmer sunshine, I have shivered in the hail,
I have seen the wonders of this earth, and what man can achieve,
And shook my head in wonderment, at those who disbelieve.

I have seen the lengthened shadows, as the old day passes by,
I have heard the ‘morning chorus’ of the new dawn’s rampant cry,
I have held a new – born baby, I have seen her grow to be,
Something of great beauty, – and a precious thing to me.

I have earned the trust of nature, it is caring and most kind,
It has taught me of it’s ‘cycles’ as each season does unwind,
I have listened to it carefully, and tried to understand,
Why natural things are ‘alien’, to people of this land.

I have given love to animals, and reaped it in return,
From all of natures creatures, – and none could I discern,
For all of these are faithful, and put their trust in us,
That we will care, and love them, and their loyalty not abuse.

I have walked on ‘Feg’ dressed common, I have wandered forests deep,
I have walked by ‘bluebells’, ‘daffodils’, I have seen the foxes leap,
I have rested by a ‘babbling brook’ I have drunk that water sweet,
And I have smelled the scented sweetness of the grass beneath my feet.

All these things are in my heart, my memory they hold,
A record of a human’s lifetime, a history to unfold,
Just a tale of simple living, of man and earth entwined,
Man and nature all together, – love and life combined!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
