Christmas Long Ago
My childhood memories of Christmas and the build up to it. Special memories that is for sure.
Christmas Long Ago
Christmas time when I was young
Was always so exciting
So magical and warming
And definitely inviting
Such fun making paper chains
Hanging tinsel on the tree
The fairy perched right on the top
For all the world to see
The fruit bowl makes an entrance
Christmas must be getting near
Satsumas, pears and clementines
Filled my heart with cheer
Walnuts and hazelnuts, Oh
Such a wondrous sight
Brazil nuts, they were hard to crack
But it was worth the fight
Christmas Eve, the longest day
When I was ten years old
The only night I’d go to bed
Without even being told
Some carrots for the reindeers
And a bowl of cold milk too
Warmed mince pies and brandy
Dear Santa, just for you
I’d lay in bed, my eyes so wide
Just waiting for a peek
Of Santa and his long white beard
As in my room he’d sneak
Morning is here, I’d run downstairs
And open the front door
The carrots gone, the milk devoured
He’s been here, that’s for sure!
We didn’t have much money
One main present, not a bunch
A chocolate stocking, my favourite gift
But not till after lunch!
A special day, in every way
A lovely meal to boot
Those were the days of Christmas past
We really had a hoot
