Christmas Cheer

Christmas Cheer

Well it seems that Christmas is around the corner
I suppose we should be full of cheer
But with trawling shops, choosing cards and stamps
The Christmas spirit fades I fear

“Get the tree out darling let’s dec it up”
“Do we have to now the kids have grown”
“There’s still you and me and the kids’ll visit
Let’s enjoy and stop the moan”

Baubles and tinsel gathered around our feet
Nowt as yet bedecked the tree
“If we look sharp we can do the shops”
I did not like the sound of ‘we’

“Don’t know if I’m up to that my luv
My leg has gone I think quite weird”
That went down like a busted flush
Just as in my mind it would I feared

So later around the shops I limped
As dramatic as I felt I could
Tried to make her feel some guilt
But nothing would register short of blood

Later that day she was on the blower
Words I caught were ”damaged knee”
Others were “can you bring him in”
So Christmas Day I spent in A&E
