Check Out Calypso

This amusing poem was written by Irene Kerr about her observations at the supermarket check out

Check Out Calypso

As we stand at the check out
At our local grocery store
The line up of glossy magazines
Is so difficult  to ignore

We’re bombarded by pictures
Of celebrities and their lives
The who what why and where
With their trophy wives

Shots of them out on the town
With whom and what not to wear
As they exit a limo
With that vacant glassy stare

They glare from the front cover
Of each popular magazine
Touting their great lifestyles
Yet so needy to be seen

Whose got the best décolleté
Or biggest derrière
Dress for shock value
In clothes just barely there

They get botox injections
To their lips and to their face
Which prohibits all expression
Guarantees wrinkles to erase

Peroxide big blonde bombshell
All leggy tall and tan
Has a midlife crisis
Admits she is a man

Pays thousands for their handbags
Much more for designer shoes
Misbehaves in public
Just to be in the news

Appears to be quite normal
With children oft in tow
Smiles just for the camera
Wherever they may go

Sadly all the pressure
Of life inside a bowl
Shatters and eventually breaks
As it takes it’s toll

The magazines and their contents
Is apparent to me at last
They depend upon each other
Or they’d fade into the past

So next time  at the check out
I will definitely ignore
The bold headlines that beckon
My dollars to ‘read more’
