Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem

It was a January afternoon I’d no particular place to go
when an old familiar song came on the radio
The back roads called to me to leave the city far behind
drive amongst the rolling foothills perfect to unwind

Despite the snow covered fields the highway was clear and dry
west towards the Rockies underneath a blue Alberta sky
A couple on horseback took advantage of the sunny day
as other livestock enjoyed a welcome bale of hay

Frozen creeks and ponds seemed asleep in Winters grasp
void of fowl until Spring releases its icy clasp
Clusters of birch and bush stark silhouettes against the sky
provide food and protection for all creatures passing by

Tracks in the snow left their own tale to tell
deer elk and other wildlife marked their trail as well
I revelled in the gift the Chinook had brought my way
enabling my excursion along the back roads on a Winters day
