Canals
Canals
From city to city the canal network reigns
Crossing the country like watery veins
From a bustling marina with colourful boats
to a quiet backwater where a swan gently floats
A heron waits patiently without any sound
ducks and moorhens seen bobbing around
A reminder of times and industry past
with locks and bridges all built to last
Under the motorway the canals make their way
above them the traffic increasing each day
Over aquaducts and through tunnels the canals steadily flow
on them life changes pace and moves down to slow
From an urban towpath with a graffitied wall
to a rural location where wildflowers sprawl
Narrowboats seen chugging gently upstream
nature and history all in one scene
Each canal has a history waiting to be told
take a walk or a boat trip and watch it unfold
