Bring back the time

Bring back the time

Bring back the time when, at quarter to five,
Alarm clocks would call you and bring you alive,
Then from your bed, then your thoughts they would creep,
To the Shallow, the Heathen, the Benches – the Deep.

Bring back the time when the breaking of dawn,
Heard the sparking of clogs and a miner re-born,
Starting his day, with a walk for a mile,
And a warm cup of tea, and a canteen girls smile.

Bring back the time when deep down below,
The coal as a river of diamonds would flow,
When miners would sweat so a river would pour,
And when nobody feared the Overmans roar.

Bring back the time with the company strong,
When miners would laugh and would burst into song,
When mothers would worry, and lovers would fear,
But the trust within miners was always held dear.

Bring back the time when a man held his pride,
And the strength of his pal, who worked at his side,
Bring back the time – yes – bring back the time,
When we were these proud men,  who worked at that mine!

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
