Big Red button

Mick Westwood shares a poem about potential destruction caused by nuclear weapons.

Big Red button

Would you push that big red button, when two men turn the key,
Could you take that big decision, with it’s responsibility,
Could you create a ‘Holocaust’, to last ten million years,
And cry, just like a crocodile, with false triumphant tears?

Could you stand before a blackened World that is sterilised from life,
And look upon the scattered ash of a Continent of strife,
Would you see the radiation as a symbol of remiss,
Or beat your chest, and your vanity, and proclaim that you did this.

Would you answer to your neighbours there in triumph or in shame,
Will history now judge you with platitudes or blame,
In a World of such great beauty and such diversity,
Would you push that big red button, – when two men turn the key ?

I am a 71 year old retired coal miner, who spent 30 years working underground. Having time on my hands, and in order to keep my brain exercised, I decided to try to write poetry and put down on paper some of my life experience, and my hopes, dreams and other thoughts. I also do a little gardening, but I am hopeless at housework. Much to my wife's displeasure.
