Beastly Slugs and Snails
A very amusing poem about the garden pests that haunt us at this time of year – slugs and snails!
Beastly Slugs and Snails
All winter we plan our garden
While the greenhouse is asleep
Yet underneath the cold ground
The slimy eaters creep
They lay their eggs and slide away
In a damp place near your plot
And we sit in the warm house
And last summer is forgot
Then with emerging snowdrops
The eggs begin to hatch
The plot is dug over
And we plan our veggie patch.
We sow the seeds under glass
And think of lots of greens
And cabbages and cauliflowers
And crunchy runner beans
Then just as we have planted them
The slimy monsters come
We should have found them sooner
But now the deed is done
The monsters are mobile
and they begin to feast
On that lettuce that we planted
The weeds are left at least!
That hosta that we cared for
Has now become just lace
We start to plan to tackle them
And it becomes a race
The slimy monsters must be stopped
In any way we can
So off we trot to buy the stuff
The best cure known to man
Hedgehogs, lizards, beetles, thrush
Would have enjoyed that feast
But those blue pellets stopped them too
We have become the beasts….
