Baby Bird
Below is another poignant poem written by Tracey Curtis:
BABY BIRD
I went to change the bed
One sunny afternoon
Then I heard a noise,
Coming from the room.
I turned around to see
With my pillowcase in hand,
It was coming from the fireplace
And I didn’t understand.
The fireplace was never used
Then I heard some flapping,
There had to be a bird in there
And then I heard some tapping
We had to get behind there
I knew it would be a mess,
But we didn’t have much choice
As the bird was in distress.
So we opened up the fireplace
We thought he would be dead,
There wasn’t any sign of him
Just bricks and soot instead.
We couldn’t understand
It had to be the weather,
Blowing down the chimney
So we put it back together.
We cleaned up all the mess
Hoovered up the floor,
Fixed the board back on
And never thought no more.
Then it was our bed time
We had almost gone to sleep,
Then we heard more tapping
Followed by cheep cheep,
Then we knew, there was a bird
behind the fireplace,
We took it down once again
Then we saw his little face
My heart was almost breaking
As he looked me in the eye
As if to say, help me please
Don’t leave me here to die
My eyes were full of tears
As I could see he was so weak,
His little eyes were blinking
He had soot around his beak.
I reached inside, and lifted him
Out of his sooty grave,
I stroked his tiny head
And told him he was brave
He sat there in my hands
Gripping tightly with his feet
Warming up his little toes
From my body heat
I cleaned off all his feathers
Not sure if he knew why,
I washed his little face, and feet
Now time to say goodbye
Outside his head was tilting
Then he looked as if to say
I promise I’ll remember you
&hen he flew away
