A Valentine to Remember

We’re fast approaching that time of year when romance is in the air….

A Valentine to Remember

It was an evening they’d always remember,
a night they’d never forget.
Romance was ended abruptly,
as they now stood soaking and wet.

Their meal was truly amazing,
food that was fit for the gods.
The lovers just sat there besotted,
smitten like two peas in a pod.

The dog was asleep by the fireside
with just an occasional snore.
The cat was sleeping quite soundly
on a chair by the living room door.

Champagne was flowing quite freely
in flutes of crystallised glass.
It followed their sumptuous banquet,
a rather resplendent repast.

He kissed his love with great passion
and coaxed her to sit by his side.
She wondered if life could be bettered,
would she ever become his dream bride?

Oh, life that evening was perfect,
relaxed and tranquilly calm.
Two lovers entwined by the fireside
with two pets to add to that charm.

The candles flickered and twinkled,
creating a magical glow.
A couple enjoying a moment,
an impeccable status quo.

When……

An ear- piercing howl from the garden
startled the dog from his sleep.
He leapt from the floor like a rocket,
and landed again in a heap.

His tail brushed across several candles,
dislodging them all in his stream.
The cat hightailed off in a panic
with a pace that was gathering steam.

The cat quickly scaled up drapery
then fell to the table below.
The pelmet came down with a clatter,
hitting the glasses like ducks in a row.

The food that had been on the table
was littered for yards all around.
The bubbly fizzed, then exploded
deafening them all with the sound.

It was started to look like a war zone
as the chocolates were strewn everywhere.
The lovely red roses were broken
and scattered around here and there.
The rug by the hearth was on fire
which in turn caught the carpet alight.
With dog and cat on the rampage
the rest of the room did ignite.

What was once a romantic, quiet, evening
turned into a nightmare from hell.
They fled from the towering inferno,
and the cat and the dog did as well.

Sirens were heard in the distance
as the fire brigade drew near.
When the room was doused and extinguished
the couple and neighbours gave cheer.
The dog and the cat just scarpered
as the couple remained on the side.
He turned to his love for a cuddle
then asked for her hand as his bride.

(What a happy ending…sniff.)
