A Lakeside Traverse
A Lakeside Traverse
Upon rising on a fine day, decided I would take
Once again, a meander around our lovely lake
Ten minute walk now drawing near
Again, I think, the Sparrows I hear
Listen! Do you hear their chatter
In the hedgerow, careful, slow, they may scatter
Seems a random twittering, maybe conversation
Who’s to know its interpretation
How to know the language of birds
Joyful sounds, or are they words
Moving along, on my face lingers a smile
Engaging the lake, I’ll tarry awhile
Trunks stand, resolute , silent and bold
Some just saplings, others gnarled, others old
Skyward, a filigree of branches contrast the blue
Denuded of leaf, now awaiting renew
There before me, geese in a gaggle
Now coming toward me, each with a waggle
A tug of the trouser, to feed me I’m told
What’s the proverb, ”favours the bold”
Muesli scattered I’m soon out of mind
What a beautiful way to just unwind
Across the water ducking and diving
A medley of wildlife and more arriving
A wash of feather and down it would seem
Part of a health and survival regime
Rumours abound that an otter abides
I’ve not seen one yet, he cleverly hides
Ooh what’s that in the ditch turning leaf
It’s a Redwing or Fieldfare after insects beneath
No sign of the Heron, there’s Moorhen and Coot
To this bounty of Nature, I deliver a salute
On the island there is a cacophony of sound
Canada Geese falling out, I’ll be bound
A Robin flits across my path, so tame
What a pleasure, glad I came
My traverse of the lake sadly comes to an end
Homeward, contented, slowly I wend
