A Birthday To Remember

When I was a child birthday parties were a luxury that we really couldn’t afford.  But my goodness, I can recall this day as if it was yesterday!!  I felt on top of the world.  We really didn’t take things for granted back then.

A Birthday to Remember

A little girl sat on the stairs
Her heart filled with dismay
Her birthday was upon her
Had they forgot her special day?

She’d never had a party
Gosh how she wanted one
But the day dragged on in earnest
Without any sign of fun

She did her chores as usual
Then was ushered out to play
Don’t come back till teatime
Outside all day you stay

Teatime came, so in she went
Whilst feeling quite deflated
A big surprise, before her eyes
And now she was elated

The drop leaf table stood so proud
Stretched out in all its glory
A feast so grand she now could see
Her world now hunky-dory

With sandwiches, crisps, and sausage rolls
And cheese with pineapple sticks
Trifle, cakes, and jelly piled high
A truly eye watering mix

Her friends turned up bearing gifts
She could not believe her eyes
They’d known about her special day
But kept it a surprise

The food, it was delicious
And as for the birthday cake
She blew the candles out with glee
As a special wish did make

The thrill of pass the parcel
Statues and musical chairs
The happiest day for definite
No other childhood day compares

This birthday was so special
And that was plain to see
I can vouch for this right now my friend
As that little girl was me
