2014

This chronicle of 2014 was written by Teresa Harrison-Best, highlighting some notable events of the past year …  she has deliberately left out some of the more tragic events …

2014

Again we come to say farewell
to another worn out year
A chronicle of many things,
some good, some bad, some dear.

In no particular order
we’ll kick off with the sport
with all the celebrations
and excitement that it brought.

Lizzy Yarnold was our special lass
at Sochi in the snow.
She won her gold and made us proud
that gave us that warm glow.

Lewis in his F1 car,
now champion of the world.
He won best sportsman too
before the flag uncurled.

Brazil then said goodbye to us
as the Germans raised the prize.
No duplicate of sixty-six,
no players immortalised.

Rory’s golf hit greater heights
an Open for him now.
O’Driscol leaves the rugger stage
where he takes his final bow.

Scottie dogs and biscuits
opened Glasgow’s finest games.
With the athletes jaunty outfit,
Jilli Blackwood gets the blame

Moving on away from sport
the political domain.
The cutting edge of British life
succinct, cut throat, germane.

Boris, Dave and dear old Ed
don’t know the cost of food.
Nadine Dorries wades right in
with comments that are rude!

Scotland gets a plebiscite
as an independent state.
Defeated no’s now battle scarred
just have to sit and wait.

The Euro zone greets Latvia
but UKIP disagrees.
Nigel warns us of the flood
from folk from overseas.

Douglas Carswell then defects
Mark Reckless joins him too.
They wear the purple UKIP badge
instead of Tory blue.

Obama befriends Cuba now
whilst Russia’s going cold.
The fall of Berlin’s evil wall
is twenty five years old.

North Korea is now affronted
then Sony gets a hack.
A puerile film called Interview
has now come bouncing back.

Philae landed safely
on sixty seven P.
Rosetta is now hard at work
to see what she can see.

The boys from dear old Top Gear
have pushed their luck again.
With Argentina on the warpath
they are fleeing on a train.

Newsnight loses Paxman
after many caustic years.
Gone dyspeptic outbursts
to the sound of MP’s cheers.

With the loss of many figures
Dickie Attenborough’s clearly one.
Robin Williams is a legend
Peaches Gelfof was so young.

Lauren Bacall was just iconic
Shirley Temple was so sweet.
Joe Cocker had some helping friends,
Rik Mayall was offbeat.

Bernard Jordon bolts from Sussex
for his ferry trip to France.
The D Day celebrations
gave him a fighting chance.

The hundred years since world war one
were given homage too.
Poppies lay as Blood Swept Lands
for the fallen that were true.

Monty Python’s flying boys
came back to take a bow.
That twerking Miley Cyrus girl
then raised the odd eyebrow.

So Happy New Year to you all
just one more thing to say.
I wish you health and happiness
for every single day!
