Are you looking for an alternative to a mainstream retirement home?
Would you like to play an active role in the design of your home? Do you want to live among supportive neighbours who help you stay independent for longer? If so, co-housing might be the answer.
Still Green is a co-housing project that aims to create two sustainable, socially inclusive and self-reliant neighbourhoods for people over the age of 50. Co-housing residents live in their individual dwellings but share some facilities, such as the gardens, storage facilities, office space and cars if they wish. At the heart of a co-housing scheme is the common house where residents frequently meet for social, cultural and recreational activities, such as sharing meals and celebrations.
We are looking for new members because we are close to securing building plots for 25 homes in Milton Keynes and 30 homes in Graven Hill at Bicester. Still Green members will have detailed input into design of each scheme, enabling us to create a sustainable, green and high quality schemes that provides a positive alternative to the mainstream living arrangements currently available to people in their third age.
Co-housing has a range of distinct advantages:
- Affordable: Lower running costs due to Passivhouse standards. High quality facilities become affordable as they are shared by a number of people.
- Sustainable: Lifetime home design for independent living. High eco standards throughout reduce resource and energy consumption.
- Social: Buildings and open spaces are designed for social interaction. In co-housing people don’t keep tabs on each others’ whereabouts but will notice if a member needs help.
- Independent: Residents decide together how things are organised, there is no external management agent, We own the homes and the land.
Still Green members play an active role in shaping the design and operation of the scheme; this requires commitment and time. If you think Still Green might be for you visit our website to find out more: stillgreenweb.org
