Are relationship second chances ever a good thing?Once the trust is broken it can't be repaired, you can forgive but never forgetViewDate:

New member looking for a chatHiya from a fellow Scot..... I retired a year and a half ago and can thoroughly recommend it.... I'm reading 'Game of Thrones' at the moment, I'm a bit of a technophobe but manage to do a bit of this and that, I just shout HELP to my sons if I hit a problem.ViewDate:

Xmas - is it too soon for Garden Centres to be selling decorations?I make all my own Christmas cards and usually start around July so it doesn't seem too early for me. I love all the sparkle in the shops in the build up to Christmas but possibly having Halloween goodies side by side with Christmas is a bit 'off'ViewDate:

Would you choose a Walnut Whip without the nut?I still miss the walnut which used to be at the bottom so would hate to lose the top one as well, also the chocolate shell used to be more like piped chocolate I preferred that.ViewDate:

Are ‘non-competitive sports days’ really better for school children?I don't see what's wrong with a bit of competition in schools, life is competetive. I well remember my school sports day, I was no good but enjoyed taking part and that one time when I came second in the three legged race gave me a great feeling.ViewDate:

Finding new friends and expanding my social circleHello LesleyM6, I'm not the best person to give advice on kickstarting a social life as I am in near enough the same boat as you but I just wanted to stop by and say welcome. I hope you manage to sort something out for yourself.ViewDate:

Just to say hello....Hiya Lynn, welcome to silversurfers, I'm quite new here too but I'm in Fife so a bit far away from Preston. I'm 63, retired and also have a shortage of friends to socialise with so I don't go out in the evenings at all and as yet have not ventured on holiday alone as I'm not sure if I'd like it, might try a few days next year and see how it goes. My son and granddaughter are coming today to stay with me for a couple of weeks so I'll enjoy their company.ViewDate:

The Taylor reportHiya VernonS I agree they should be chasing the sharks and not the little fish, some people need those cash in hand jobs just to help them survive and as you say they do pay indirect taxes when the money is spent.ViewDate:

Do you drink a cup of coffee every day?Marley444 I agree with all you said, we read too often that this is good for you and that is bad then all of a sudden the reverse is true! I just eat and drink what I fancy and don't take any heed of what the so called experts say.ViewDate:

Charlie Gard - what are your views?I worked for a short time in a hospital for severely mentally and physically disabled children and I well remember a baby girl who was terminally ill, she had hydrocephalus among other things, she was fed and cared for but no intervention treatments were used, Her granny visited every day and always asked if she was any better, it was heartbreaking. Her parents never visited. Lionel I agree with you that there should come a point when we say no more....ViewDate:

Career change ideasHi Kevwatto and welcome to silversurfers. How about a taster course in college for your horticulture and/or counselling? Some years ago I did that when I wanted to change from nursing to social care.... not such a dramatic change as you have planned but I completed an HNC at the age of 48 and felt quite proud of myself..... good luck with whatever you decide.ViewDate:

Looking for a chat buddyHello happyhacker, good luck with learning the piano/keyboard. I've been busy sorting out my garden this year, it'll never be bonnie but it's improved on last year and I'm enjoying the flowers in the tubs I planted. I like to walk as well but at present I'm not in a group. I joined the ramblers a couple of years ago and enjoyed it until my work pattern changed leaving me unable to meet them. I'm now happily retired but haven't got around to rejoining I just walk on my own when I feel like it.ViewDate:

Charlie Gard - what are your views?I do feel sorry for the parents of Charlie, they did all they could to try and save their little boy and just when all avenues had been pursued by Medical experts, the courts etc. the decision should have been made but no.... in steps the Pope and Donald Trump to prolong things once again. Realistically what sort of life would the little guy have even with treatment? How far would his recovery go? I'm not sure..... it's all so sadViewDate:

Private Home HelpsI worked as a home carer for the council and was pretty poorly paid but that was my choice and I enjoyed the work. I knew people who did private home help work on the side but I wouldn't dream of asking how much they charged for the service, the rate would have been agreed between them and their clients.ViewDate:

Was life in the past preferable to today?People's lives were more difficult in the past, work outside and inside the home was harder, money was short but I do believe families were closer than today. I grew up in a small village where everyone knew everyone else and neighbours helped out in a crisis, now I am on speaking terms with my nearest neighbours but that's about it, I fell down the stairs and was taken away in an ambulance, no-one checked on me when I got home.ViewDate:

Do you class yourself as physically active or inactive?I may not conform to the guidlines but I feel I do enough exercise, I take a brisk walk every day and sometimes longer walks not so briskly. I also do housework and gardening regularly. If I feel like it I do exercises at home, I've tried the gym but don't feel comfortable there.ViewDate:

Kindle vs BookI love real books and always read them at home, but I also have a kindle which I use on holiday, it's so much easier to carry than lots of books, only downside is I used to leave my books in hotels for others to enjoy but obviously can't do that with ebooks.ViewDate:

Relationship break downsI'm very lucky, my son and daughter in law split up 3 years ago, my son's in the army so when he comes home on leave that is his access time to his daughter and they both stay with me so I see her lots, I also see her when her dad's away, I only have to ask.ViewDate:

Double DippingIf I saw this happening I don't think I'd be able to eat the food either, I don't like the thought of others touching my food...... I'd prefer little individual tubs of dips but I know that's probably being silly.ViewDate:

Looking after a grandchildI realise this is an old post but it may be relevant to others so I thought I'd add some content. I am totally smitten with my granddaughter so can understand this man wanting to help his daughter and spend time with his grandson, his main mistake was in not discussing the matter first but I think it could turn out to be a positive experience for everyone concerned. I hope it all turned out well in the end.ViewDate:

Made redundant at the age of 50Hello Geek84 Iwas also made redundant a week before my 50th birthday,it was a very scary experience, I tried going to the job centre but they seemed more interested in telling me when I would be eligible for benefits rather than helping with employment. I worked in the care sector so applied for any job that came up and I was lucky enough to get four interviews and was offered two of the jobs so I chose a full time position. In all I was unemployed for three months, I know I was lucky and I hope by now that you have also succeeded in gaining employment.ViewDate:
