FuneralsWell done CaroleAH for writing down what you want to happen at your funeral, it's something I suggest to people constantly .......... "write down what you want, music, type of coffin, whether you want it to be religious/non-religious or just a 'light touch' with, say, just the Lord's Prayer and a space for reflection to allow for those attending who may want that space for their prayers" --- and please don't say, "it doesn't matter to me, I won't be there" - until you have sat with a grieving family who say, "we don't know what he/she would have wanted" - it's a celebration of your life, so tell people. And I agree about the flowers - but laying a single flower on the coffin looks lovely......I've done funerals where they've had a teapot and a cup and saucer on the coffin, one lady insisted that everyone place chocolates on her husbands coffin because he was a chocoholic - it was lovely, and funny. The trouble is, we avoid death, and we shouldn't because along with taxes, it's the one thing you can be sure of - we all have to die, so make the saying goodbye the way you would want it to be.ViewDate:

FuneralsThere's some lovely felted wool "coffins" made by a company in Cornwall - they can be embroidered and are quite beautiful, and all natural products.ViewDate:

FuneralsAs a response to the "re-usable coffin" - there's the cleaning cost of the coffin to be taken into consideration - I'll just say - bodily fluids!!!!!ViewDate:

FuneralsThere are a few things that need clarifying - folk attending a funeral do NOT see the coffin "going into the furnace" - oh please where did that come from. The funeral is actually a very important part of the passage for the folk left, and it is my experience that the wishes of the departed, if wishes have been expressed which is very rare, have been adhered to as much as possible, that the wishes of the family/friends have been adhered to as much as possible. The funeral director will NOT nonchalantly hand a bill for £5000 or more at the end, the costs are gone through beforehand so that the family understands, and they have choices as to what they wish to pay for, the type of coffin, music, celebrant and so on. It is an individual thing which, in my experience, is attended to with great care and compassion. Every effort is made to ensure that the deceased is given a respectful and compassionate service, and that the grieving family is cared for with the same respect and compassion. Of course there can be many stories of mistakes and downright bad work/business - but they all try to make it as painless as possible. We also have to consider the nature of death, sudden/unexpected/suicide/child/young person - it's so easy to criticise. My plea to folk I meet is to write down what you want to happen at your funeral, don't say "it doesn't matter - I won't be there" - those who love you will, and they want to honour you in the best way they can - so choose what music you would like played, do you want it to be a religious ceremony or non-religious/humanist. The biggest problem we British have is our culture which doesn't "do" death, we don't confront it, we don't want to think about it......the trouble with death is - it's inevitable, a bit like taxes, as someone once said! Oh - and remember this - death brings out the best and worst in people, and old wounds and hurts come back and revenge is sought - family feuds rekindled and so on......ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?NO we do not choose to become addicts - we choose to drink too much or take drugs, the addiction comes later - how many can't get through a day without a cup of tea/coffee or chocolate or whatever the "want" is - that's addiction, but of course we can't be addicted to tea or coffee oh yes we can - addiction is addiction - not chosen or sought because we all suffer from the "it won't happen to me" syndrome. Goodness what it must be like to live in an ivory tower.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?I think I should clarify that my own comments were made ironically!! Our NHS is an amazing thing and something that we should fight to keep, meeting the needs of people at their "point of need". To pick on certain elements of society, I feel, is totally unfair, yes obesity is a huge, forgive the pun, problem, many many overweight/obese people are that way for a variety of reasons beyond overeating. No drug/alcohol abuser wakes up one morning and says "I know! I've never been an addict, I think today I want to be a drug addict/alcoholic" I was married to an alcoholic - addiction is as much a state of mind/physiological - to suggest that these "selfish" people should be charged is unreasonable. My husband was helped greatly by the NHS but he still drank himself to death. Hence my suggestion that all those other things should be charged too, albeit ironically, after all, if folk didn't have a genetic disposition then they wouldn't be diabetic, overweight, have a heart condition and so on - I blame the parents! There is no easy answer - and it certainly isn't charging folk to see a doctor. Perhaps we should be looking to the people who make all the junk food, McDonalds to name but a few. Stop companies making alcopops, selling booze so cheaply, having happy hours. Stop the breweries from taking over old disused churches and turning them into pubs/bars. Increase the police force and army, arm them all and let's live in a police state that stops people from becoming addicts and obese. Now there's a thought - she said tongue firmly in cheek.ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?Have we mentioned mental health problems? I think it's easy to "judge" if you are lucky enough to enjoy good health. If you are not that lucky and have problems that are not your fault perhaps we could wind our necks in and be a tad less judgemental.ViewDate:

Your last mealAs I am an obese, drunk, drug addict with a congenital heart condition - not to mention a familial tendency to cancer - I doubt the burners would consume my body..........so perhaps a skip would be a better option - would there be nice odorous candles to take away the rather nasty smell of my decomposing body........ViewDate:

Your last mealOooo - why am I going to die, is it because I might drink, smoke, take drugs, am overweight, have an inherited condition, enjoy dangerous sports - and why must I eat - I think I would far rather use the time writing my funeral service......ViewDate:

Should smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people be charged to see the doctor?Perhaps we could add to that list people who insist on bearing children knowing they will be passing on a congenital disease/condition, which will inevitably cost the NHS a deal of money - I think hitting on smokers, drinkers, drug users and obese people is too small a list.......ViewDate:

Who would make a better President - Donald or Hillary?AHA - light bulb moment - just checked Mr Trumps' lineage - mother Scottish (OMG don't let him move to Scotland) father of German extraction - should I go on!? Now where shall we suggest Mr Trump return to - although in fairness he isn't an illegal immigrant........hmmmmmmViewDate:

Who would make a better President - Donald or Hillary?,I worry about Donald Trump being elected - he makes outrageous, sometimes very scary, comments and then, realising his error quickly backtracks and tries to cover himself ....... anyone who can do that as often as he does surely cannot be trusted with the safety of his country, a country made up of immigrants - a country whose immigrant population took the land and resources of the native people - pauses to scratch head, I wonder what familial history belongs to Mr Trump and should he return to his ancestral country.......? If Trump finds it so easy to say whatever comes into his head in interview/debate and then, not retract but "reshape" what he has said in an attempt to justify himself, then how easy will it be for him, as President, to order actions or make statements that can inflame outrage and incur violent reaction, and then when it's too late try to change what he has said. I sincerely hope Trump does not get the Presidency.ViewDate:

Do you think that all dogs should be microchipped?I have a wonderful dog, a rescue, as have almost all my dogs been. You see rescue dogs very often come from being abandoned/unwanted/bored with and none of that includes badly treated. I believe that chipping might aide a sense of responsibility by people who want to have dogs, children especially whose parents give in to their pleas, it makes the dog easier to be reunited with its owner, and the owner take responsibility for their wandering dog - but there is also the down side that some experience that a mauled and mutilated dog, from dog baiting/fighting has been found and the chip leads to the owner from whom the dog is stolen, at least the owner can know what happened to the dog that disappeared. Yes to chipping. But what about doggie bags and clearing up - I met a young girl and her mum and cute puppy the other day, puppy is bred so they "know what they're getting", puppy chipped. "And you carry bags and pick up after your dog will you?" I asked the child, she screwed her nose up and said "Maybe" - mum looked uncomfortable - great! more dog poo left by antisocial dog owner.......now there's another conversation.ViewDate:

Religious choiceI agree with Celtwitch - what's the point of this question, if you haven't got a choice then there isn't a choice to be made. Perhaps the writer means "if you could only choose between Muslim or "practising" Catholic" and if you were being given such a choice why would you put forward Muslim or "practising" (one day I'll get it right) Catholic - or are we considering a world where there are only two choices - I can't see that ever happening. Sadly "religion" is at the heart of most of the worlds/peoples problems - but if you want to discuss faith, now that, I believe is a different discussion.ViewDate:

Should over 70s have to retake their driving test?If your response was to my comment, I believe it has everything to do with age - we need to be more self aware, it's easy as we get older to be set in our ways, unwilling to see that we may make mistakes that we perhaps wouldn't have made when younger, many of the folk I met on the Advanced Drivers course were retireds' who sought to enhance their driving skills, being aware of the advancing years and slower reactions, some of whom had had one too many speeding fines and had attended the speed awareness course, also a wonderful experience. I also believe that young people should undergo advanced driving courses, but that would be unmanageable sadly.ViewDate:

Should over 70s have to retake their driving test? When I retired I did my Advanced Motorists training and passed my test first time - I'm very proud of the achievement and whilst I felt I was a pretty good driver before, the experience helped me to enhance my driving skills and become more aware of my own driving as well as other peoples'. Self awareness is key in driving, anger management too, oh and the biggest fear I have is seeing, usually, elderly women behind the wheel of a car they can barely see over - bumper seats for shorter drivers please!! I am insured through IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) and that has become cheaper, but the biggest advantage for me is self awareness. I worry too about drivers who are clearly afraid behind the wheel, the car driving them rather than them in control and relaxed - driving should be fun and enjoyable. Just a thought.ViewDate:

Fifty shades of greyOh this is interesting - I have literally just joined this evening, just back from seeing the Dad's Army movie, such fun - and what a wonderful cast of Silver Haired entertainers. Me - well I found my first grey hair when I was 19, and have gradually added to them over the years, until now at ......my mid 60's - I know I know I don't look a day over ! I now possess the thing that causes people to ask - "how much does it cost? how often do you have it done?" Yes - it's the infamous Mallen Streak - and I'm proud of it - my response to the questions is that it has been bought and paid for by my life experiences and I wear it with pride. Just once a hairdresser when she asked if I'd ever considered having it coloured, said she could make it silver/white all over, when I pointed to a model photograph, so I agreed to have it done - and ended up with my hair being every colour of yellow, orange and red!! Which I understand is caused by the reaction of my natural chemicals to the chemicals in the dye! It was fun while it lasted and has since been only its natural colour, which I love.
