Cessie's bio
Hello.
I am a 71 year old female who lives in Kent near Canterbury. I love musical theatre I have seen many countries but now I am on my own I have to pull my horns in.
I am a people person and have found retirement difficult to come to terms with.
I try to keep my sunny side up but its hard at times. My last venture was to try clay pigeon shooting I have had to book a visit to Specsavers !!! I would like to find a male companion for trips out .Just friends would be great to break the monotony of some days. I am still going to Zumba classes so remain very active.

Online dating dos and don'tsHello Soldierbloo, I have not looked at the site for some time but caught up today. I found very interesting what you said about dating sites I have been on one a couple of times during winter months when feeling company would be nice. I am 74 very active and got all my marbles so when I received some of the awful messages from young & old I found it very worrying as I had said I wished to meet someone 73-77. I soon realised there were men on there looking for rich widows which I certainly am not . It appears none of these sites are safe if you are vulnerable male or female.ViewDate:

Do you have trouble sleeping?I cannot remember the last time I had a really good nights sleep. Which is not helped by the warnings we are given about the problems that can occur because of lack of sleep. I did have a CPAP machine for a while but could not get on with it. I dread the thought of taking sleeping tablets. I have fallen asleep while out for a meal and was still chewing ,I have also fallen asleep standing up when I have got so tired . I have tried everything alas nothing has helped . I grab a power nap when possible but it is for a very short time.ViewDate:

The story of my life - Part 1Wonderful reading so interesting I sometimes wonder what the young of today will write in later years their lives seem so simple & free from hardship these days. I know for myself my young life was traumatic but looking back it made me the strong person I became I did not use it to say woe is me. I think recording our lives is a good thing because I found out things about my family long after they had passed away things were not talked about in those days. Well done.ViewDate:

working in our 60sI am now 71 and oh boy how I wish I was still working I try to fill my days as much as possible but I have no incentive now. I worked full time until I was 68 then just went cold turkey which was a big mistake friends did tell me I would go stir crazy because I was such an active person with a very busy job (how right they were).ViewDate:

Has the magic of Christmas diminished?I totally agree we used to get away to a country where the meaning of Christmas was so different than here the families could be seen taking the tree home Christmas Eve the children would decorate it while the grown ups prepared the celebration meal. Like magic the lights would come on in the outdoor trees down the mountain side Christmas Eve it was fairyland. None of this manic shop till you drop culture. Personally since I lost my husband I dislike everything about this time of year & cannot wait for New Years Day to arrive when I take a deep breath and say " Come on old girl snap out of it and get on with life" .ViewDate:

Has the magic of Christmas diminished?I thought I would try to bring back some of the magic of Christmas so I went to choose a tree with my sister and great nephews. There was a wonderful grotto with the old fellow in red with his elves. Much to everyones surprise I beat the children to be first on Santas knee. (must have been the mulled wine) .Poor Santa.ViewDate:

Changes in tasteOur tastes do change as we get older but our food has been messed about with so much these days not for us to enjoy but to bring in the most profit and to make it keep for longer. Buying day to day was by far the healthiest no preservatives ect Did anyone see the programme that went to a research lab they were trialing feeding dried maggots to animals what the hell next I really felt sick. When I was a child my uncle kept pigs and they were fed on swill ,he would boil up all the tiny potatoes from his allotment ect ,he was very particular that the food was ok. All the neighbours saved their potato peelings for him. The pork was delicious now I find it tasteless. A friend gave me a cucumber she had grown in the summer what bliss unlike those awful supermarket things that are grown purely in water & fertiliser. Oh dear I must get off my soap box but I feel strongly about the rubbish that is added to our food we keep being told to cut back on our salt intake the manufacturers should be made cut back on all the other dangerous rubbish that's added as well.ViewDate:

Online chattingHi happyhacker Like you I am very cynical about life but I love laughter it is my medicine but I find so many people as they get older lose their sense of humour. Have you been successful with your allotment they have become very popular here in Kent mind you my friend lost most of her vegetables this summer they believe it was gypsies understandably she was very upset. I love the piano but never had lessons I am trying to teach myself to play the ukulele but with little success I have threatened my friends they will see me busking in Canterbury. Anyway if you would like to chat feel free.ViewDate:

Insomnia - Any help or advice?Hi lonemoan. Well I wish I could sleep during the day but just not possible I have tried everything. I have never been one to sleep for long periods when I hear people say they can sleep for 8 hours I think if only. I am not happy about sleeping tablets having worked in the NHS I am aware of the pitfalls ,they are a very low dose & as yet have not worked any magic . And now they are telling us insomniacs are more likely to have dementia that's something to look forward to charming isn't that enough to send you cuckoo. My GP asked me if I took enough exercise I said yes, do you drink alcohol before bed (No) and I quickly said before she did I do not watch much TV of use the computer an hour before bed. She then said maybe a holiday would help sort your insomnia out, I wanted to say will the NHS pay for it. I live in the hopes that someone will have a new idea that I have not tried yet. Do you find it gets you down at times. CessieViewDate:

Firework nightGreat times we were lucky my aunt had an orchard so we spent days picking up all the fallen wood and building a huge fire .My son would invite school friends and my uncle would appear from behind a tree dressed as a ghost to the childrens delight, although one year he had a very rude awakening I always kept buckets of water near by just incase, one of the lads grabbed one and threw it over my uncle in panic. Then we would have baked potatoes, sausages & beans. Finishing the evening with the ghost hunt wonderful.ViewDate:

Migrant Problem at the EurotunnelThere is a video on YouTube now that is a real eye opener it shows the behaviour of young men who are fleeing their countries.!!!!!. Their aggression towards those trying to help them is despicable. Hospitals are having problems because certain religions will not have female nurses or doctors treating them . Why if they love their country & religion are they leaving it and not fighting for it yet they will make a stand when they arrive in another country.ViewDate:

Do other people feel the same way as I do. Strawberries used to be small and sweet and flavoursome.I live near to where Kentish strawberries are grown and I do not think taste comes into it. So many things are being grown in water with feed in, just awful. Supermarkets put so much pressure on growers . The cucumbers that are grown only in water are disgusting the difference when you taste a home grown one is huge. People seem to have given up on taste we are being brain washed. I now try to buy from small local growers who still go for quality and taste.ViewDate:

The 60s ... What did like best about the 60s?Oh my the memories of the 60s are wonderful, dancing every Saturday night having to run for the last train home was unbelievable the guys on the station got to know me and very often held the train while I ran with shoes under my arm down the steps and up the other side a finger would be wagged at me with a shake of the head & the door would be slammed behind me. The competition with other girls to have the most layers of net petticoats. I had my hair done every Saturday & had a coloured water rinse on my bottle blonde hair my poor mother never knew what colour I would be when I came home. I am reminded of the 60s every day because I ruined my feet with the high heeled winkle pickers how on earth I danced in them I shall never know. The music was great & there were so many groups around then that played at dance halls that would have knocked the socks off some of the groups of today. I didn't have much money but I would buy good plain dresses ect then dress them up with other things. I remember when the first all night motorway services opened the motorcycle boys would take us there after the dance & I would arrive home about 3am ,of course my mother thought I was up to no good but we just loved staying & having a laugh it was innocent fun. Those were the days ahhhhhh.ViewDate:

Do you think Camilla should be crowned queen?I think your comment about Princess Diana having mental problems was cruel and unfounded it is a known fact the public were fed untruths about her by Charles camp this was admitted by one of the ex staff and a royal reporter on a tv programme. What ever she became she was driven to she could not trust anyone. And as for William & Harry excepting Camilla they are doing what is expected of them . They are aware their mother was wronged and will make sure she is never forgotten. As for Camilla little has been said about the way her ex husband was treated the rumour mill suggested he was looked after whatever that means but he also was made look a fool in the face of the world.ViewDate:

Has the magic of Christmas diminished? Those were the days my friend. I also remember stirring the Christmas pud at my grandmothers & making a wish. She was very busy from November pickling onions & red cabbage she also would make chutney. One Christmas I went to Maidstone market to buy the fresh turkey I bought such a large one it would not fit in the oven so I had to tie the door with string wrap baco foil around the door & get up at 2am to turn the oven on it took 10 hours to cook. Oh happy days.ViewDate:

Migrant Problem at the EurotunnelA friend & I are really add odds over this problem she has with others been collecting clothes ect then they went over to Calais where to her shock they were insulted by the migrants who burnt most of the clothes & screamed at them we do not want your clothes we want to live in your country. Need I say she is not returning she admitted for a while they feared for their lives. And now agrees we do not know what agenda some of these people have.ViewDate:

Donations - home or away? When I lost my husband suddenly 4 yrs ago we lived in a tied flat & I was given notice to quit. I went to the council & asked for help now I was not after benefits just somewhere that I could afford to pay the rent,I have never claimed a penny in my life. I was given very short shrift and told so many days after receiving the eviction notice I should contact them and if necessary they would find me a B&B my local councillor contacted them on my behalf & said I & my husband had been an asset to the town & surely they could see their way into finding me somewhere as he new they had recently given a home to a foreign family that had been living with family in Dartford he was told that 10% of homes have to be given to outsiders!!! I was distraught & finished up on antidipressants. My problem was I didn't have money but I didn't owe any either I had always kept my head above water.I finished up in rented property that had damp ect but I could not afford anything better. I am afraid I have now swallowed my pride moved into a better property and shortly will be applying for benefits. Charity should begin at home but I am afraid it does not.ViewDate:

Are there any members from Kent?Hello Pam, I was in Deal recently went for a meal in a hotel on the seafront,it did get very run down a few years back but its up & running well again cannot remember the name . I also go to the Royal Marines Panto . I have found things very difficult since I retired the problem being most of my friends were younger than I & are still working so I do not see them often now we go on a girlie day every few weeks . I am a people person I worked at The Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital in Herne Bay so I really miss that contact with others. I am very close to my sister & her family but she has her own life & interests. I do still go to Zumba so am still active. I love musical theatre on Wednesday I went up to London with my sister to see Memphis with Beverly Knight & Matt Cardle X Factor winner ,sitting infront of us was Alexander Burke another X Factor winner. Should terminally ill patients have the right to die?To stand by a patients bed & have them grab your hand & beg for more pain relief & being unable to help them because those in charge say its too early or its not time yet, believe me stays with you. Some medical staff are over cautious in fear of a back lash that they have over dossed a patient. Any one that could stand by a patient screaming in pain for hours & for those who do not believe it does not happen now really need to get real. You have no right to tell me I should suffer intolerable pain the medical profession of which I was part is a long, long way from perfect. There are of course wonderful staff who have compassion & treat people like a member of their family & their love for the patients is so rewarding to witness. When I know the time has come I want to go & it would be such a relief to put that in writing now.ViewDate:

Migrant Problem at the EurotunnelI really get fed up with people that say we do not do enough in this country. Drive around some areas and you would not know you are in England .We are losing our identity that's for sure. I live near to a large elderly care home that was closed because of lack of funds. The poor folks were moved around some no longer near their family so their visits will be less. Its now being reburbished for migrants.I am sorry but this does not sit easily with me. My grandfather fought for freedom for this country .I really fear what the next twenty years will bring. Yes of course the pictures are distressing but we cannot be all things to all people if we ourselves want a decent country for our grandchildren and great grandchildren in the future. When our old folks are being cared for & our NHS is not at threat & our council waiting list isn't 23,000 over the country. We could do more.ViewDate:

Dieting - it just 'clicked'Well done . I also have dieted on & off most of my adult life I lose the weight & am so pleased I vow I will never put it back on again but after months of going without sweet things something just seems to snap & off I go back on the cakes & biscuits I then get so down that I have blown it. I have blamed many things for letting myself down. I have people say you just have no will power but why was I able to diet for months & not crave sweet things I needed will power then. I do envy people that have been successful & keep the weight off. So be proud of yourself. -
