Purrfect's bio
I've just turned 73 (how did that happen?) Unsurprisingly I'm retired. If you've ever seen the film 'Educating Rita' you've pretty much met me! When the film ends we don't know what Rita's future will be, but I became a university lecturer & had a small desktop publishing business writing teaching & learning materials for schools & colleges. I'm a widow (no children) & I love films, reading & pottering about in the garden. I've found that as one gets older the address book gets shorter & so I've joined Silver surfers to keep my brain functioning & hopefully to meet interesting people online who have similar backgrounds & interests...One of the things I like most to do is to write. Lancashire dialect poetry & short stories based on my own life experiences. -

New today!Hi Soloman & Jan I'm up for a chat with both of you & afternoons suit me too. You've both mentioned 60's music - what was not to like? I loved it too inc. all the groups you mentioned. It was nice to know where you both live & Jan I'm not very far from Barrow-in-Furness. I live in Clitheroe which is a small & very pretty town not too far from Preston. I've lived here 9 years having lived in Yorkshire & latterly in Shropshire where my husband & I moved to when we got married. A lovely part of the country. When I think of the 60's I do associate it with freedom & good times although I remember my late mum not being overly keen on it. I think she thought that every time I went out the door I was going to get drugs! (Something I never did in fact)! The trouble was she read the News of the World & the Sunday People & every headline seemed to be about drugs! Like most girls of the time I wore mini skirts & she used to say she had 'wider belts'! She was born in 1928 when fashions were just a tad different! I suppose each generation thinks the new one has things wrong. I try not to do that if I can help it although I do worry for youngsters now about social media. Anyway, if I'm not careful I'll be writing War & Peace here so, hope to hear from you both soon. Best regards, NormaViewDate:

New today!Morning to you! I'm guessing you're Jan (can't keep typing puzzlerJan) :) I also remember Saturday morning pictures. I grew up in what was then a small village (Castleton) on the outskirts of Rochdale. Believe it or not the village had 3 small cinemas. None now of course. The village was semi-rural then but now it's really just an extension of Rochdale. So my 2 siblings & I used to do quite a bit of roaming around - making dens etc & getting up to mischief. Funny you mentioned Kent - that's where my husband was from. I didn't marry until I was 50! Also not too well. We separated after about 7 years but he sadly died a couple of years later. Life doesn't always give us what we hope for does it? Keep in touch NormaViewDate:

New today!Lots of memories from the '60's (& 50's - as a child of course). I was born & brought up in Rochdale, Lancs., but left when I was in my early 20's. Where are you from?ViewDate:

New today!Hi there - saw your post & noticed you were born in '51 - me too. How did that happen? I don't think I'm 73 - my body does, but I don't! Don't know if you're male or female - not that it matters. If you feel like a chat just let me know. Best wishes to you.ViewDate:

New MemberSmilesalot - thanks for getting in touch. I'm not entirely sure how this works. I got a message saying you'd like a chat & to click on the link I got. I did that but couldn't find you! Hope this works & that you do reply as like you (& you guessed from my name) that I love cats. Sorry you're unwell & a bit isolated. Life can be tough can't it? Having a chat can't hurt. Do get in touch again if you'd like to.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsI absolutely agree with you Berri. I've seen people die in excruciating pain because palliative care does not always alleviate pain. I don't believe people should have the power to stop me ending my life if I feel I need to. I appreciate others think differently, but I don't think they have any right whatsoever to prevent me doing what I think is right for myself. I feel quite furious that they believe they have the right to prevent me making what I consider to be a rational decision &/or perhaps that I don't understand the implications of any 'right to die' legislation. That in itself is an insult to my intelligence & of my capacity to understand their point of view. Importantly, I also think protections can be put in place to prevent people being coerced into ending their own lives. Such protections, of course, are essential. Finally, I know that some people who oppose 'the right to die' philosophy base their objections on religious grounds. I respect their beliefs unreservedly. However, I don't share them & I don't think my rights should be denied based on the religious views of others.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsWhat I've never understood is why anyone who voted to leave the EU felt in any way whatsoever that they would see any benefit to themselves or their family. I have yet to meet a single person who says they have benefitted from Brexit. The next thing the so-called Brexiteers & their ilk will want us to do is to be in favour of leaving the ECHR and the results will be exactly the same. No-one will feel any individual benefit whatsoever if it happens. I wish people would read serious books/articles about the rise of the Right & what 'the Right' actually means & what its effects are likely to be if the likes of Kemi Badenoch or Robert Jenrick ever become PM.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsYou are in good company - Jeremy Paxman & Billy Connolly to name but 2! I imagine the latter would smile at your poem & be impressed by your stoicism. I am! Best to you.ViewDate:

New MemberHello - I've signed up with Silversurfers for the first time today. I live in the north west of England & I'm hoping to make some new friends & keep what passes for my brain ticking. I'm a retired university lecturer & I'm 73 (how did that happen?) I imagine many of you have discovered, as I have, that as one gets older, one's address book gets shorter. So, I'm hoping to find things to do here, people to chat to, & to find new interests. Thanks for reading. -
