Mari50's bio
I am living with a disability caused by trauma. I love doing papercraft, cross stitch, reading historical novels but my favourites are preTudor. I live alone and have done for about 35 years and prefer it. I would love to be able to go for a walk in the woods somewhere but am unable to so I watch You Tube on NowTV. Not the same but I can go abroad without getting on a plane!!!! -

Silversurfers Book Club Spring 2024I love reading and find the books on this site entertaining. I am not sure whether you have had Victoria Hislop’s books on here but I have read The Figurine which was published last year and enjoyed it so much much that I went on to read some of her others. My favourites were the The Figurine about the Junta after the 2nd World war and The Island about Leprosy in Greece..ViewDate:

Should all Christmas parties be off this year?I think that small family parties are ok but definately not large parties inviting those out of the family circle.. What happened last year was completely out of order especially when such a famous place was involved. Where were the police guarding the property. To be honest who can you trust. I shall be going to me son's for a coupke of hours this year.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsHow do people feel about Monday and so called freedom? Personally I think it is irresponsible and a catastrophy waiting to happen. The Government want people to act responsible so they can pass the buck. Society is tooooo selfish and thoughtless to do that.ViewDate:

Would you be happy to visit Europe this summer? What fools these people are to let holidays to the EU begin. Someone going to Spain which is not Covid free. I believe it is orange, could easily nip over the border to Portugal and get to the UK on a green light. Any countries can do this. To be honest I think everyone is coming out of lock down too quicklyViewDate:

Is it too early to book a holiday overseas?I think it is far too early to book holidays abroad until all these variants of the endemic are finished. Personally, you would not get me on a plane anyway. I do not understand why people want to go abroad. I would much prefer to go to places in Britain instead of thrown up hotels overseas.ViewDate:

Are you worried that other people are not following Covid rules?Hiya Twohoots I agree with you one hundred percent. People come into Cornwall to there second homes and basically get away with it. There are loads of complaints going in to the Council and Police but you never hear about what happens. The Government should ban second homes (lol). No it won't happen but I bet this virus would be so widespread if they did. We have had a campervan down from London to go surfing!! There were also people from the East down rock climbing at Dartmoor.ViewDate:

Are you worried that other people are not following Covid rules? It does worry me that people are not sticking to the rules of social distancing. There is always an excuse which really upsets me. Personally I think that the Government should clamp down heavier. It also makes me cross when the Government keep changing their minds. People do not know where they stand. I am disabled and don't really go anywhere but I still bide by the rules, Some have said I am over cautious but can you be?ViewDate:

Step back in time: to 1961Those were the days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed it, working and living on a farm on a small island off Land's End. Living off fish and rabbit and domestic farm animals. Growing our own vegetables. we worked hard but we also had a good time. People now do not know how to enjoy the simple life.ViewDate:

Speakers Corner Commentshiya Did anyone see the Simon Reeve programme on Sunday. It is so refreshing to see a journalist show the world how inequality is shown. Everyone sees the beauty and holiday spots of a community but Simon showed what it is all bout. I lived in Camborne for nearly 30 years but I was upset to see it as it now because all trade has gone elsewhere or closed. I worked in one of the factories in the 60s and I enjoyed it. Thank you Simon for showing the real life. .ViewDate:

Silversurfers Autumn Survey...the results are in!Hiya The pandemic has not made a huge difference to my life as I am practically housebound with a disability. I have discovered that I do not want to join associations. I prefer to see someone on a one to one basis but I get on with my own company. My son comes to see me once a week which is a big plus. The big problem is how selfish people are. A lot do not keep to the 2 metre distance and it is what they want not giving a monkeys what is good for the country. It does not suprise me that we are having such a rise when people demanding what they want. Sorry this gets me down. Peoples attitude.ViewDate:

Silversurfers Book Club Autumn 2020Can you please add some historical novels? I also really like the Janet Evanovich books with Steph as the lead. Not for people who have no sense of humour. The problem is, I never know when there will be a new book out. I really like the Grandmother and would like to be like her if I had the guts.ViewDate:

Is a second national lockdown for vulnerable over 50s the right way forward? It is not the over50s who are causing a second spike it is those who are younger and those who do not care. In the South west we have visitors who do not care about the 2 metre distancing. They also believe that because the southwest is not a hot spot for the virus they can do what they want. It seems that the older generation are the only ones being sensible. Why should they be locked away for something they did not contribute to?ViewDate:

Do you prefer traditional books or audiobooks?I do prefer traditional books as I like the smell of the paper. Unfortunately because of my disability I can read only those with less than 400 pages dur to the weight. I do have a kindle and use it at bedtime. I do not like audio books at all.ViewDate:

Do you feel that freedom of speech is becoming restricted in the UK?We are losing our right to so called 'free speech'. Everything has to be politically correct just in case someone does not like what you say. I was advised not to join a club because I was too young. In age I wasn' t but in the way I act I was. I told soneone who wanted me to sue foe ageism. I basically told this person that I took it as a compliment and still do. If people have to mouth off about political correctness rhen they should look at themselves. Everyone is different and I believe that, if what is said is not abusive, then what is the problem. People should be allowed to express their thoughts without being accused of all sorts if what they are saying is non offensive.ViewDate:

Would you eat lab-grown meat?I would definitely not eat lab grown meat. I am partial vegetarian. I may eat a desert spoon of meat a week just for the taste. I cannot eat meat because of an arthritic jaw but I was never a fan of it. Everything seems to be lab grown. I think scientists are using it as an excuse because all our farmland is taken up by developers building houses. People say that it is a environmentally friendly way of eating but is it more environmentally friendly than keeping proper animals in the fields than houses. I think notViewDate:

Are we on a countdown to chaos? We are most definately on a downward slope to chaos. Bournemouth is a good example. Although there are those who give excuses there is none. It is time people took resposibilty as they have been too long blaming someone else.. I live just south west of Bournemouth in Cornwall. A lot of people are scared because of visitors coming down. The teenage riots are another example of chaos with people trying to justify their actions. There is no justification and we should take the same stance as Europe instead of being a great big nanny state. People do wrong they should be pu ished instead they are allowed to get away with bad behaviour and who suffers. The innocent!!!!!!ViewDate:

Would you be happy to visit a National Trust garden next week?I would love to go to a NT garden but there is none near me. I have no transport to get me there either. I am disabled so it will be difficult for me. If I travel too far by back seizes up. In Cornwall there are few NT gardens as now everything is grey with building. I have never been to the Eden project!!!! Reading through other views I think that members should be asked first as they pay a subscription.ViewDate:

Should disposable barbecues be banned? The actual barbaque should not be banned but rhe people who buy should be banned from buying anything like it. We live in a 'do-gooder' society ruled by those who believe that it is thier human right to do what they want and not care about the consequences. They think it is ok to bury these items in the sand so that bare fet would be burned and leave them in woods so that nature is killed and firemens lives are put at risk. Personally things like this are too dangerous for the selfish and arragant people to buy. It is the responsible ones who sufferViewDate:

Is it sensible to allow specified year groups back to school?I do not think it is a good idea. What if someone has a child in year 1 and one in year 4 there could be some impossible explaining to do by parents. Also children are not sure what 2 metres are. If a child sees a friend he or she will do what all children of thst age do. I am glad all mine have grown up!ViewDate:

How are you coping with Lockdown?I have the same problem Yodama. The day to day life is the same but deliveries are a nightmare. I have food deliveries and before all this lot my groceries were unpacked for me as I am unable to do it myself. I must admit I do not know what I would do without my groceries being delivered. The main problem for everyone in Cornwall is that people are coming down here for holidays and the government are just saying "no" but are not doing anything about it.ViewDate:

Would you feel confident taking a holiday flight from 1st July? You got to be kidding!!!!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't get on a plane any day of the year even if you paid me let alone July 1st. You look up at that little room at the nose of the plane and see the ant up there and expect to join them. No way. If we were meant to fly we would have been given wings.ViewDate:

Does the new 'Stay Alert' slogan convey a clear message?Hiya I think that the message being sent around by Johnson is very confusing and in my opinion would only escalate the virus more. I must say that Scotland has the right idea. Stay on lockdown a bit longer to make sure. The West Country has the lowest death rate I wonder how long that will last with the new proposals. Sorry I am going off on one but I am gettin very worriedViewDate:

Lonely and vulnerable and looking to chatHiya Kiara R I know the feeling. It is the same in Cornwall. I am also disabled and used to go out for a walk, just for a few minutes just by my flat. Up to a week ago I could go to the nearest carpark and walk around there for five minutes and see no one. Last Sunday 6/4 I saw three youths and a girl together walking along the road and several people have notice more people out and about and a lot more cars. No more walking for me for a while. People do not observe the 2metres either. I do some crafts when I am able and I read.ViewDate:

Is 7-years-old too young to give children a mobile phone?I think anyone under the age of 11 should not have a phone. People are letting their children grow up too quickly. It is healthier for the children to play with parents in the park, not be attached to the phone and especially not a smart one.ViewDate:

Is obesity a lifestyle choice or a disease?Hiya I personally think that people should start taking responsibility for their well-being instead of blaming everyone else and everything. I have arthritis and fibromyalgia and one counsellor for arthritis was very surprised to find that I am eight and a half stone and not overweight. I do mild exercise for about 20 minutes and walk for about half an hour a day. A short walk is the better than being a couch potato.ViewDate:
