AnnaL's bio
Now enjoying retirement after a busy life. I love reading, painting (or trying to!), meeting with friends - coffee/lunch/quizzes and so on. Member of U3A and Probus.
Love it when the sun shines and then it's off and out to see our beautiful world.
In fact, I just love life - even with all of its problems. I try to live my life with gratefulness, optimism and contentment. And as someone said 'if you are in a situation which can't be changed, then the only thing you CAN change is your attitude. Very wise. So here's to the next 100 years!!!! -

How has your life been affected by arthritis?Hi everyone, It has been a while since I posted before. Housebound at the minute following more surgery on both feet - so have time to catch up with SS. If you've read my posts before then you'll know I've had RA since a child - diagnosed at the age of 4 - and now OA also. This latest op on June 2nd is the 8th or 9th on my feet, and at my age, it will certainly be the last! What really gets me this time is that for the first time I've had to go privately for the surgery, because of the long NHS waiting lists! 2 more years on top of the months I've already waited. This is costing £6000 after a lifetime of paying health insurance etc. And, yes, I know that I've had good service from the NHS in the past, but I'm afraid the service is now in dire straits. Anyway, gripe over. All best wishes to my fellow sufferers - I hope each and every one of you gets a good sleep tonight and wakens without too much stiffness in the morning,ViewDate:

PaintingHi Ruball, and thanks for getting in touch. Since my visitors left a few weeks ago, I've not had the 'urge' to get the paints out again - until today, when I spent ages 'resurrecting' my watercolour tubes. Unlike Ness I have no dedicated place to paint - and have to do it on the dining-room table. Which, of course, means that all has to be packed away on a daily basis, which isn't good! By the sound of things you have a very busy life and have done a lot of painting too. I see you do not live very far from myself - I'm in Co. Armagh. I really started experimenting by watching various videos on YouTube and picking up some info from them on different techniques. Most of these are more easily picked up through watching the videos - rather than by trying to explain them. Search for 'poured acrylics' or 'fluid acrylics' as a start, and the rest will follow. All best wishes - and good luck to the donkeys! AnnaViewDate:

PaintingHi Ness, and thanks for contacting me. To tell the truth, it is so long since I posted re painting that I'd almost forgotten about it. Added to that, have had a guest for the past 2 weeks and 3 more arriving on Monday for another 2 weeks - so I'm afraid no time to paint just now. BTW, I DON'T run a guest house - these are family members who live overseas. As to paint, for years I was strictly watercolour, but lately I've discovered a love of experimenting, mainly in acrylics. I've been doing abstracts for the first time - some of which I love - others not. Yes, I've used salt, along with cling-film, bubble wrap, poured acrylics etc. But I am so impressed with the things you are doing - your classes sound such fun and I'm sure your pupils love them. And yes, it would be nice to be able to share. I already do on a FB artist's page and it is so nice to see just what others are doing - and to receive the comments of others on your own efforts. Keep doing what you love Ness and I wish you loads of success. xxxxxxxxxxxViewDate:

Pass the pliers pleaseJane, You could be writing the story of my daily life! It is so frustrating - and wasteful - when so much packaging is used and the lids and tops are so difficult to get off! And don't get me started on 'child-proof' medications! Then we end up buying all sorts of gadgets which are designed specifically to help us to remove the dratted things! And I've found it is not only pensioners who have these difficulties as many of my younger friends complain about them too. Like you, I find the trusty pliars good to have - and keep mine in the kitchen drawer. Rant over - have a good day! AnnaViewDate:

Do you get enough sleep?Very broken sleep lately. For some reason I am getting a lot of cramps - mainly in the feet and ankles. The only way to relieve them is to get out of bed and stand. Such a nuisance.ViewDate:

English GrammarOne expression in common usage is 'up for grabs' I feel this is indicative of our materialistic society. The misuse of the apostrophe always catches my eye, also incorrect spelling. Maybe, as someone else says - it isn't important, but I think more emphasis was placed on correct grammar when we 'oldies' were at school.ViewDate:

How has your life been affected by arthritis?I contributed to this thread a couple of hours ago - and would just like to add that in spite of RA + OA life is good. There are so many worse illnesses one could have, so I am just thankful to be as well as I am. To me losing my sight would be just the worst thing! I get so much pleasure from looking at lovely scenery, lovely paintings, reading books, seeing a baby's smile - so many, many things! And being able to look and see certainly helps in forgetting any ailments. Research is showing also that having a positive attitude helps with pain - and indeed, helps in most situations. So I try to always have my glass half-full / not half-empty! There IS a difference!ViewDate:

How has your life been affected by arthritis? My earliest memories are of pain - I was eventually diagnosed at the age of 4 with Still's Disease (Junior Rheumatoid Arthritis). My legs were put in plaster of paris to keep them straight - and my first surgery was when I was 13 to remove a toe which had been made very crooked by RH. Since then I have had a further 7 surgeries on my feet, 2 knee replacements, and a trochanteric bursectomy. This last has left me with a limp and continued pain. PAIN, PAIN, PAIN. STIFFNESS, LOSS OF MOBILITY, LOSS OF USEFUL FUNCTIONS IN HANDS, WRISTS, ELBOWS, SHOULDERS, etc. These are what having arthritis means to me. In addition to RA I have also OA. The rheumatologists have tried every treatment available - and I have also tried alternative remedies. Still the disease continues. I am now receiving biological therapy, which does keep the pain at bay most of the time, but has its own side effects, one of them being the suppression of the immune system. As others have said, arthritis sufferers don't always look as though they have a problem - in many respects it is a hidden disease. I long for the day when it might be conquered - too late for me perhaps, but a cure would rescue others from a lifetime of misery.ViewDate:

Pay it ForwardGreat thoughts Irene. I believe all acts of kindness should always be 'passed on'. It is these acts of kindness, gratefulness and love that make the world go round.ViewDate:

Always Love YouThese sentiments are so beautiful Martin. Could I ask your permission to use your poem at our Ladies Probus Club. We are having a 'celebration of love' in all its forms, and this would be so appropriate?ViewDate:
