Do you prefer the texture of vacuum-packed mince?I don't eat that much meat these days but when I do I go to my local butcher and buy the best I can afford. Apart from it being cheaper, it's fresh and it's locally sourced (within 25miles). The reason I switched to the butcher was supermarket meat increasingly doesn't taste of much - it looks like meat but that's about it. It also comes from goodness knows where! |When the horse meat in burgers scandal broke, the supermarkets had to admit that they had no idea where their meat originates - they could only track it through the final few countries before reaching the UK but couldn't name the source. Eat that if you want, I have chosen not to.ViewDate:

Should we be worried about Artificial Intelligence?Of course we should be worried. History tells us that inventions/discoveries, although having the potential to do improve the lives of people, is rarely used in that way. The splitting of the atom was a wondrous achievement but we used it to create deadly weapons and bombs. Research, often funded by taxes and generous donations from the public, ends up creating drugs and cures only the well off can afford. There are solutions to climate change but they're being sat on because they wouldn't make enough profit of would undermine other industries. We know AI has the potential to help people in countless ways but history tells us that it will be used negatively. Yes, we should all be worried about that.ViewDate:

Ginge and whingeHe has sold his soul to American media and they will eat him up and spit him out the way they have always done. Both he and his wife are now media owned and will give media what it wants. He said he's done this because he was forced to when he lost his income as a fully functioning member of the 'institution' he professes to hate (I do wonder why then did he plead to remain within it albeit on his own terms?) Yes he does have mental issues, as do most people to varying degrees. There will be a lot more of these 'revelations' and they will become increasingly ugly and ultimately outragious as he's pressed by media to be more and more sensational. He says he has to 'provide for his family' but that is not true. He is a multi millionaire in his own right and his wife is independently wealthy in her own right. What he means is he has to sell his soul (and all his relations) to maintain the quality of life he is used to.ViewDate:

Has Harry finally gone too far? It's all about money, for the media and the publishing houses. What they have hear is a seriously disturbed man, surrounded by money motivated vultures disguising themselves as those who care about his welfare. They encourage him to be as vicious and outrageous as possible because that's what sells, that's what makes money. It will hurt a lot of his family but ultimately he will find himself isolated and probably more mentally disturbed than he already is.ViewDate:

Looking for friendsHi KImmer. I opted for the "Chat" option because it's more reliable than these pages (sometimes difficult to loacte, replies don't always appear and often with delays etc). Yes, diagnosed with RA back in 2013 and I won't have to tell you how it completely changed my life as I reckon you will already know about that aspect of it. I'm fortunate in that they eventually found the right cocktail of meds, which allows me to have some good days, which I make the most of! As everything in life is about 'attitude', I try to stay as positive as I can (what you think is what you become, as they say). Easier said than done but... onward and upward! :) I'm glad to learn that you found your best friend! We all lose touch too easily these days but the internet has brought a lot of old friends together. Chat via email if you prefer, or in the Chat facility on this site. Whichever suits you best. Wishing you well SaraViewDate:

New and looking for a pen pal/friendshipHi and happy to to exchange emails with you! I'm immunocompromised too and Covid restrictions didn't bring to many changes to my day to day life as I don't get out anything like as often as I did! Still, it was a worry all the same. I have lots of interests and always keen to learn from others so if you want to begin a correspondence, I'm more than happy to do so. Sending my regards, SaraViewDate:

Lets get the Photography forum moving!Very much agree with this, although I'm fairly new to the site and your comment is over a year ago! I am a member of a photographer group on Whatsapp and was hoping there would be an equally active one on here too but it's a bit ... lumpy! Lots of waiting for a response on anything. Very frustrating, especially as I'm keen to pick up hints and tips, organise 'photo days' get social, be helpful, supportive, have fun and to keep learning!ViewDate:

Hello to you allHello again John, It's difficult, especially when health issues end up changing how you live your life. It really is about attitude. I don't mean being all happy clappy regardless of the facts, but looking it full in the face and saying, "Okay, that's how it used to be, now this is how it's going to be" and just navigating around those obstacles. Took me a while, I won't pretend otherwise, but what really made the difference for me was pain management. I scoffed the offers of going along to those sessions but one day I thought, "Okay, nothing to lose". Being a rational individual I was expecting a lot of mumbo jumbo about 'look at this way' etc. and, initially, I thought that's exactly what all this is. But, it turned out that attitude really was the turning point. I was proved wrong and happily so! Still have days where lifting a full cup of tea is an awkward, painful, clumsy business but there are other days when it's not and in those days I make the best of every tick of the clock. I know your health issues are not the same as mine but I can't emphasise enough, just how much of a difference our attitude to it helps. I send very best wishes to you, SarahViewDate:

Hello to you allHello and thank you for responding! Yes, the pandemic blew everybody off course and why oh why is it proving SO difficult to get '.back to normal'?? I have recently started watercolour painting. I was given all the required bits and bobs as a present some years ago and really wanted to try. Each time I picked up the box I just couldn't make a start. I think I was a bit afraid, if that makes sense? Anyway, it lay there for years until one day last year I stumbled across it whilst looking for something else. This time I did open it and just dived in! I suppose it was a case of the 'right time'. Having such fun with it, even I don't know what the painting will be until I've finished it! I hope you are well and staying positive, despite all that's happened around us lately and, of course, recently. Sending good wishes to you, SarahViewDate:

Hello to you allI guess it's about doing what you can! The physiotherapist at the hospital told me that it's not about what you can't do, it's about finding new ways of doing it. Easily said I know and it took me a good few years to grasp that RA isn't something I'll ever beat (which is my instinctive response to anything negative). It's something I have to learn to live with. I'm clumsy at times (drop things, no grasp etc) but that doesn't upset me now, When things don't work out as planned I now shout (out loud!) "Plot change!" and just carry on. Some days a trip to the shops is all I can manage but, like many people interested in photography, I'm a keen observer of all that's going on around me and when I can't take photographs I write about my observations. There's always a way around xxViewDate:

WALKING!!!I have a similar situation Sally. I have RA and although always a field and forest walker, I find I can only do that with frequent 5 minute stops. I would love to find a walking group that didn't feel held back by those who have to 'walk and stop' a lot! I also agree that walking with others is a completely different experience to going on your own!ViewDate:

WALKING!!!I love to walk, used to spend most weekends walking the Derbyshire Peak District. Then I was diagnosed with RA which knocked me back a fair way, in every way imaginable. However, now on a frightening amount of tablets that enable me to walk some days so I do. Problem is I haven't yet found a walking group that can accommodate someone who needs frequent 5 minute rests! Yes, I could go on my own and sometimes I do but it's a different experience completely when you walk with others! I also like to take my camera because you never know what you you might be fortunate enough to witness in the countryside.ViewDate:

New MemberHi Anne from beautiful Inverness! I grew up in Prthsire and visited Inverness several times, a beautiful place. I've also started dabbling in watercolours - I posted my first effort on another site and everyone was really sweet about it. The best comment was "I love your energy" LOL Thing is, whatever you create, be it a story, a poem, knitting, a painting etc, never ever throw it away! YOU created it and that makes it worthy of being. It's really good to compare first efforts of anything because it shows how much you have improved! Please don't bin anything you create (unless it's a recipe that went horribly wrong lol). Chat soon I hope and meanwhile, take care''Sara x ,ViewDate:

Hello to you allHello John and yes, a lot of topics. I joined a few months ago but still finding my way around. I too have an interest in photography but find it a bit moore difficult now due to health issues. Still take off in my car and find somewhere interesting to wander about with my camera. Usually the Peak District but there's lots of amazing places. I have started to make my photographs into greeting or inspirational cards. Haven't decided how best to market those yet, just enjoy making them at the moment! Good to have another keen photographer on board! Sending best wishes' SaraViewDate:

Best British Movies of the 80sI would think, on so many levels, Educating Rita has to be my first choice from the list. It was funny, it was sad, it was groundbreaking, in as much as it encouraged a lot of people to enrol with the Open University. A wonderful legacy from the Harold Wilson days - whatever your politics, this was undoubtedly system that changed countess thousands of lives. All those people who could easily have gone to university but had instead to go to work, doing anything, because domestic circumstance needed their financial contribution. IT was set up not to compete with other universities but to provide affordable access to university level education. Of course now it charges the same as all the others, meaning most of those it was originally aimed at are again excluded. But, in the window of time when it operated as it was set up to do, it brought life changes so many who otherwise would have spent their lives doing a job just for the money. Educating Rita opened so many doors for so many people.ViewDate:

Anyone interested in paranormal experiences?I'm open minded about most things and I've been around long enough to know that there are so many things we don't yet understand. I've had a few occasions where it was impossible to explain what happened, and as I try to understand everything that leaves me annoyed! lol I've had countless conversations about reincarnation for example but logic prevents me believing in that. I know that those who believe in it hold that belief passionately and I respect that, I have had a few experiences that people have told me was 'evidence' of a past life but I lean more toward 'inherited memory' as an explanation. Science has proven that we inherit tangible traits such as eye colour etc and also intangible traits such as the ability to play a musical instrument or whatever. It's no great leap for me to believe that we also inherit memory too. There's lots of research going on regarding this and I think, eventually, science will prove that genetically, we do carry memory of our ancestors experiences. They lie dormant until we find ourselves in a location, for example, where an ancestor lived. This is what happened to me whilst visiting a farm. I knew that there had been buildings (barns etc) on what was now open fields and I felt completely comfortable there. It was much later that I discovered one of my ancestors had lived there.ViewDate:

Greetings, looking for a PenPal...Hello Val, Always happy to correspond! I'm not quite sure how to do the 'chat' thing online though, so perhaps if you could explain how I do that? I'm comfortable with techology (don't like it but know how to use it lol). Worked with some complex software in my job for many years. In fact, I've been connected to the internet since 1997! It's just that every application has it's own way of setting things up, as does this site. Have to be honest and say that the 'every day stuff' isn't of much interest to me, I can indulge in it for a few minutes than my mind starts wandering because I'm thinking, 'Okay, so it's sunny today, what now?' sort of thing. I'm not knocking it, the main thing is communication and we all need some of that! Thank you for replying! SaraViewDate:

Washing machines: a brief historyMy Mum got her first washing machine in 1967. We were at the Modern Homes Exhibition and Mum was fascinated by the demonstration of how this twin tub washing machine worked! The man put the spinner on and, to demonstrate how stable it was, he balanced a threepenny piece on the lid and it didn't fall - that was enough for Mum and suddenly we had a Colston Coronet twin tub washing machine lolViewDate:

Does the inclusion of calories influence your menu choice?I don't eat out that often, once maybe twice a month and when I do, it's regarded as a real treat, something special. A time when I can relax, not cook or worry about doing dishes afterward etc. Part of the treat is choosing whatever I want from the menu, regardless of cost or calories. It is a treat! A once in a while occasion so, whether the food I choose is 'good or bad' is never an issue. It's the same with any occasional food treat, be it an in season fresh cream strawberry tart or a plate of in season fresh English asparagus swimming in a wicked home made hollandaise sauce or a very rare bag of fish and chips!ViewDate:

Any vitamin/supplement suggestions please? The only thing I take is cod liver oil Emma. I have RA and my vitamin D levels can be erratic. The doctor gave me vitamin D tablets to take every day but after doing some research and speaking with the nurse at the hospital I discovered that the the tablets were so well below the level I should have been taking. I spoke with the dietitian and she said don't waste your money, buy a bottle of cod liver oil from any pharmacy, one teaspoonful a day provides just over the daily recommended amount of vitamin D. I have been doing that for almost 7 years now and regular blood tests are showing my vitamin D evels are what they should be. The non branded bottle I buy is £1.10p and lasts just over a month - much cheaper than any branded vitamin D tablet and, of course, all the other benefits cod liver oil provides!ViewDate:

I don't want a Smart phoneAndrew I can agree with much off what you have said, particularly when it comes to trying to contact or respond to the NHS. I am not keen on mobile phones full stop but did have a basic non-smart phone for many years. I always kept it switched off and only used it when I had to make a call, Unfortunately I developed RA (rheumatoid arthritis) in 2013 and very quickly found that the tiny buttons on my mobile were impossible to use, due to my fingers sometimes locking, swelling and or being painfully sensitive. A 'smart' phone was gifted to me because they thought using a flat screen would be easier. It is actually and that is the only reason I use it. I have also developed hearing difficulties lately and communicating by text has been extremely useful for me. Smart phones are really hand held computers but I still prefer to use my laptop - the buttons and screen are bigger!
