Should smacking a child be banned in England and Northern Ireland?Fine. Ban smacking. Then when a child that I'm attending to just won't behave and does dangerous or disrespectful things I'll call the police! They can sort it out then.ViewDate:

Does your car have a spare wheel? No it doesn't but in "ahem" years of driving I have only once been in a situation where I really did need a spare. It was one Christmas when I was driving on the M62 (now renamed the M60 I think) through Manchester on a windy night, with my wife and three kids on the way to see the in-laws. I heard an odd road noise so pulled up on the hard shoulder with traffic tearing past just a yard from my shoulder. Yep, a rear tyre was flat as a pancake and the comment that it was "only flat at t'bottom" was unhelpful. The vehicle was a Mitsubishi Shogun which carried the spare under the car in a cage. To get to the spare I had to empty the boot, which was cram-jam full and undo a bolt to release said cage. The bolt was stiff, very stiff and as I leant on it there was a sickening SNAP. The cage fell releasing the tyre and taking with it the bottom of the bolt, the top was in my hand. Replacing the wheel was easy but I was then left with the task of securing the tyre cage as I couldn't simply remove it. I know that traditionally women's tights are used to replace a broken fan belt but I found another use for them! Tyre cage secured, boot repacked now including flat, and spare in place we completed our journey. Surely that was it I thought, nothing else could go wrong but I'd forgotten the weather. I was sat having a quiet and well-earned Scotch when I heard one hell of a bang and clatter. The bloody wind had blown a stone tile off the roof of the house and the damned thing had landed on the bonnet of the Shogun and left a flaming great dent in it. My cup of joy was overflowing and folk now wonder why I have a loathing for Christmas!ViewDate:

Do you agree with the decision to axe HS2 northern leg?I'm somewhat ambivalent. Once again, the south receives significant investment and the rest of the country gets bu**er all. And yet it always was an expensive presitige project to reduce travelling time by half an hour, Have businessmen etc. not heard of video conferencing and, God forbid something so mundane, telephone calls. The money would have been far better spent on upgrading exisiting lines. (Mind, one wonders about the wisdom of investing in any industry that is so riven with industrial action and strife). This is before we consider the human and environmental cost. Farms destroyed, homes lost, ancient forest wiped out....the list is almost endless. At least the northern section won't now be wreaking such destruction. Good riddance!ViewDate:

Do you still use your cookbooks or have you shifted to online recipes? On behalf of my wife.. :) We have recipe books by our favourite chefs/cooks such as The Hairy Bikers and Lorraine Pascal (wicked cakes!) but go online for recipes we can't find in the books. However, I then print these out! Its a lot easier to read recipes from paper than a screen and you don't get flour all over your mobile or iPad. If its a good recipe we save the paper copy and I might even make a copy in electronic form.ViewDate:

Do you support the delay to the 2030 ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars? This ridiculous policy should never have been put in place at all. Electric cars are much more expensive than new cars and need to be run for at least 60,000 miles before they become more "carbon efficient" than ICE vehicles. And where is all the electricity going to come from to power these cars? Try standing on a bridge over the M6 and count the vehicles going one way. Double that then multiply by, say, 100 and you might just begin to get some idea of the scale of the problem. Then what about recycling the batteries for these cars - that issue has still not been properly resolved. The plan seems to be to push the majority of motorists off the road onto public transport which, as we all know, is clean, reliable and convenient (hahahahahaha). If "they" want us out of ICE vehicles there really needs to be a practical alternative. The ones I do feel sympathy for are the manufacturers who must be scratching their heads now.ViewDate:

Do you think that the speed limit should be reduced to 20mph on all urban roads?Fine if that's what the residents want but if I were a tradesperson or anybody else who needs to drive to such places I would either refuse or charge a premium for travelling there. Do you think XL Bully dogs should be banned?1.How can we possibly determine what is and what is not an XL Bully when we don't even have a strict breed definition? We had all this before when Pit Bulls were outlawed with arguments over whether or not such and such a dog was one of the specified breed. Mind, it made lots of money for the legal profession and so-called experts..... 2.The real problem is not the dog but rather the owner. I remember times when Alsatians (now called GSDs), Dobermanns and Rottweilers have been accused of being dangerous breeds. The most dangerous thing about them was the idiot on the other end of the lead (typically then, a shaven headed youth). Unless you know how to train dogs properly, or are prepared to learn from those who do, you should not have ANY dog. Knee jerk reactions like this rarely achieve anything other than confusion and problems down the line.ViewDate:

Should there be heavier restrictions on vapes to stop use among children? The whole purpose of "Vapes", as initially claimed, was to help people come off cigarettes. It seems now that some people use them, permanently, instead of cigarettes whilst others, especially the young, use them as a stepping stone to tobacco. This is ridiculous. They should be sold only to people over 18 and there need to be very heavy penalties for failing to comply with this requirement. When I think of tobacco I often remember the Bob Newhart "sketch" where he pretends to be a Tudor discussing tobacco with Sir Walter Raleigh. "So you take these dried up leaves, roll them up and stick them in your mouth. Don't tell me, let me guess (laughs)...you set fire to them (laughs more)." - Sounds ridiculous doesn't it?ViewDate:

Should we encourage children to identify as cats and other animals?Ridiculous. Children need to be taught the difference between playing "let's pretend" and reality. Offering children a plate of cat food, on the floor, instead of dinner would probably change their minds. All of this nonsense about self-identification reminds me of a joke and yoyu know what they say, many a true word is spoken in jest. A doctor is visiting a mental hospital and chats to one of the patients. "I'm Napoleon Bonaparte", says one chap. "Oh, who told you that?" asked the doctor. "God did" is the reply. "No I didn't" shouts somebody further down the ward.ViewDate:

Do you give your dog a raw food diet? Please do be careful if you feed your dog a raw food diet. Yes, I give mine things like sausages, liver, kidney etc but ALWAYS cooked and ALWAYS stuff that is fit for human consumption. And I have seen how the raw food diets are made. Essentially they are made from slaughterhouse or butcher's waste. Waste, not condemned meat, the latter is disposed of by a number of methods. The waste meat is collected, transported and stored prior to production and it is essential that the cold chain is maintained. Much of the material, by its very nature, is heavily contaminated with bacteria some of which, but not all, are pathogenic. Allowing the meat to warm up can accelerate bacterial growth reaching unacceptably high levels. Yes, SOME testing is carried out but not on every single consignment of product. And yes, we are talking about some real nasties like salmonella. These can, and have, made dogs very ill not to mention the possibility of cross-contamination into meals for the owners. So if you really must feed raw food to your dogs be damned careful!ViewDate:

Is your cat microchipped? It has been a legal requirement to have dogs and horses microchipped for some time and the system now works very well. It isn't expensive given the peace of mind you'll have that should the animal be found it has a good chance of being reunited with you. One piece of advice though, keep the documentation safe and remember to change your details with the company that holds your records should you move house or change your 'phone number for example. I'm sure this will also be a legal requirement but its easy to forget and is one of the main reasons why the system fails occasionally.ViewDate:

Do you think eating cake at work can be compared with passive smoking?A typical woke type comment. Its everybody else's responsibility to deal with other peoples' eating issues. Sorry, but if you're eating cake when you shouldn't, that's YOUR problem. The only exception would be for diabetics or allergy sufferers etc. when it would be nice if they were offered an alternative. Smoking is a different issue. If someone smokes their neighbours are forced to inhale their "fumes". This was a ridiculous comment. Incidentally, home made cakes are often far better for you, and tastier, than supermarket stuff.ViewDate:

Should masks be reintroduced to stop the spread of winter illnesses?Oh dear. Another armchair expert on epidemiology. Sorry, I don't mean to be mean but... Where is your evidence that flu levels were lower during the pandemic? I tried, unsuccessfully, to find year by year data. But, lets assume you're right. Why do YOU think this might be? There are many reasons why this may be the case. For example, medical advice was that you really didn't want a double wammy of Covid AND flu so authorities were really pressing for flu vaccination - I certainly had a flu shot. There again, the various recommendations etc to avoid Covid will have had a suppressing affect on flu incidences such as limiting contact with others and general hygiene. Simply saying that masks alone, as you imply, reduced the level of flu is, to say the least, naive.ViewDate:

Should masks be reintroduced to stop the spread of winter illnesses?Oh, in some ways I agree but...... I wonder how they do these assessments of the effectiveness of face masks? No doubt the researchers carefully apply the masks then take their necessary measurements. What they should should do is "grab" people off the street and test them! I guess that they might carry out statistical analyses but you know what Mark Twain is reported to have said - There are lies, damned lies and statistics. Masks do help but only if they are of the required quality and are fitted correctly. And I should know. I was trained in their correct use to prevent me picking up Avian Influenza. The masks we were required to wear were full face with screw on filters and they were tested in-situ to make sure they worked properly. That or full hoods with hazmat suits. Personally, I think the real value of many masks is simply to remind people that respiratory diseases are about so wash your hands and stop picking your nose! :)ViewDate:

Should masks be reintroduced to stop the spread of winter illnesses? If you want to wear one, fine. But quite honestly, they are really not very effective. Far a start they have to be constructed to a certain standard. Secondly, they have to be fitted correctly. For example, if your glasses mist up when you're wearing a mask, the thing is leaking! If your moisture laden breath can get out, virus particles can get in. Then there's the matter of safe disposal. They really should be treated as clinical waste. They could be loaded with anything from COVID to TB and I have got sick and tired of seeing them thrown away on streets and pavements - never mind the hazard they present to animals. And what about the raw materials used to make them? Then we have the ones with valves. During the lockdowns etc. we were told that the masks were mainly to stop infected people passing the virus onto others. Guess what folks, the damned valve opens when you exhale thus allowing you to spread your bugs far and wide - thanks a lot! Yes, some people may be wise to wear them when advised to do so for medical reasons but even then they should a take heed of my first two points.ViewDate:

Would you like to have a White Christmas? No I would not. Its a pain in the proverbial to work in for the likes of farmers and can be dangerous to travel in whether on foot or in the saddle or a car. It might look nice when freshly fallen but soon turns into a horrible grey mush that makes a mess of the fields and roads. And believe me, I've driven in the c**p more times than I care to think. Do you support the Royal Mail reducing deliveries to week days only?In reality they can do as they please but.... The increasing cost of using the Royal Mail, the competitors out there for the parcel service, the increasing use of emails including electronic cards, and the unreliability of an organisation now plagued by strikes could all mean the eventual demise of the organisation or at least a great diminuition. Remember the miners in the 70s and 80s? Effectively priced themselves out of a job. The same could happen with the postal workers.ViewDate:

Will the cost of living crisis impact your Xmas spending budget?Probably not. But we try not to go overboard anyway. Christmas has become far too commercialised these days. Christmas should be about family and friends and the message that it is supposed to embody.ViewDate:

Would you be happy to do Jury Service?Cynical? Perhaps, but I prefer realistic. The whole system is flawed. The result is far too often dependent on how good/expensive a legal team the two parties can afford when in reality it should be entirely dependent on the facts and surrounding circumstances. I have been involved in far too many prosecutions and had my time, and those of many others, wasted by the shenanigans of the legal bods. £64.95/day? Can I assume that the lawyers/barristers get paid the same rate? Is that how much they think people are worth? Less, I believe, than the minimum wage.ViewDate:
