Welcome to a world of comfort: new sofa styles at sofa.com
We go behind the scenes with sofa.com co-founder and chief sofa boffin Rohan Blacker to hear the inspiration behind the designs of 3 new sofas: the Herbert, the Bingley, and the Emily corner.
The Herbert (pictured above)

‘Inspiration for the Herbert came from something I saw at an auction – it was an art deco armchair with arms similar to this style, but the back cushion was too big. I wanted to create a neater version: something smoother and more interesting to look at. There’s a good rake in the seat and the loose back cushions are small and neat – it’s cosy.’
(In case you’re wondering, the rake is a sofa boffin word for the angle of the seat in relation to the back). We think this style would look great in any of our laid-back brushed linen cottons in calming neutral colours that let the curves speak for themselves.
The Bingley
The Bingley 2 seat sofa in house herringbone ‘pigeon’, £995
‘We were keen to add another tufted-back sofa to our range. It’s very of the now and the specialist skill of tufting, when it’s done well, really holds a piece of furniture in shape’.
A fairly formal style sofa, the Bingley suits a smarter fabric – we chose linen herringbone, which adds texture and subtle pattern without being overwhelming. There’s enough going on here with those buttons and seams, so go easy on pattern and accessorise with scatter cushions instead (pictured above is our house Denby floral linen). If you’ve got the space for it, the Bingley makes a great kitchen sofa – there’s something very inviting about a neat, fixed-back and seat for absent-minded flicking through recipe books or scanning the Saturday morning papers in your dressing gown…
The Emily Corner
The Emily medium corner sofa in house viscose linen ‘rock’, £2,630
‘We’ve been working on this style for the best part of a year with the aim of creating a sofa that was deep and luxurious sofa but with neat lines. The result is the Emily Corner, whose slim arms and comfortable cushions packed full of feathers make it a winner. ’
For a corner sofa, the Emily is relatively compact. Equally capable of carrying a light neutral with a bright velvet or even a pattern, this versatile style looks great in a textured grey, allowing movement of light across the sofa. Add colourful cushions to break up the monochrome, such as our Feathers fabric in white and savory (pictured – coming soon).
Sofa.com are constantly adding to their range of sofas, beds and chairs and soon they’ll be introducing some lovely patterns and fresh coloured linens to their fabric collection, so watch this space.
