Legwarmers – the 80s fashion trend
Our legs were never warmer than in the 80s!
The long thick footless sock originally worn by dancers to help keep their lower leg muscles warm became a massive fashion craze during the early 80s.
Popularised thanks to the movie Fame and of course Jane Fonda with her legendary workouts, legwarmers began to be worn not just with aerobic gear but ventured out of the dance studio and onto the streets.
It wasn’t uncommon for young women to be seen wearing them over leggings, jeans or even with a skirt. Leg warmers looked good and were easy to wear.
Relatively cheap to buy there were soon a variety of colours and fabrics available which meant they could be accessorised with many different outfits, some even choosing to pair them with high heels!
By the late 80s leg warmers were out of fashion but they were still available to buy from dance shops and they can be found online today.
And who knows – as with many things retro, perhaps they’ll make a comeback sometime soon?
Here’s a little reminder of how the cast of Fame wore them in the 80s:
Did you own a pair? What memories do you have?
