Donny Osmond or David Cassidy – who was your pin-up?
Early seventies pop heartthrobs Donny Osmond and David Cassidy adorned many a teenager’s bedroom wall. Were you one of them? Who was your favourite?
Donny Osmond
Part of the family singing group the Osmonds, Donny with his youth and good looks was often thrust out in front of the group in a bid to appeal to the teen-girl audience.
The strategy worked so well that in the early seventies Donny went on to have several successful solo top-ten hits while continuing to sing with his elder brothers. Songs such as ‘Go Away Little Girl’, ‘Puppy Love’ and ‘Hey Girl/I Knew You When’ made Donny into a teen idol.
Joining forces with his sister Marie, Donny had further chart hits and hosted the successful Donny and Marie variety TV show which ran from 1976 to 1979.
Donny went on to have a varied career. He has starred on Broadway as Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and starred as Joseph in the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat which broke records during its six-year run with more than 2,000 performances in the US and Canada. Donny also sung the critically acclaimed ‘I’ll Make a Man Out of You’ from the Disney film Mulan.
In 2009 Donny won the American version of Strictly Come Dancing and in 2019 Donny and his sister’s live show Donny & Marie’ came to an end after an eleven-year run at the Flamingo Las Vegas.
David Cassidy
Teen idol and superstar pop singer of the 1970’s David Cassidy was best known for his role as Keith Partridge from the musical sitcom, The Partridge Family.
David was responsible for 7 chart topping Partridge Family singles including ‘Doesn’t Somebody Want To Be Wanted,’ ‘I Woke Up In Love This Morning,’ ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do’ and ‘I Think I Love You.’ Ten albums by The Partridge Family and five solo albums by Cassidy were produced during the series, with most selling more than a million copies each.
But internationally, Cassidy’s solo career eclipsed the already phenomenal success of The Partridge Family with hits such as as ‘Cherish,’ ‘Could It Be Forever,’ ‘How Can I Be Sure,’ ‘Rock Me Baby’ and ‘Lyin’ to Myself.’
In fact, David was so successful that he became the first personality to be merchandised globally. His face could be found on everything from posters to cereal boxes and with sold out concerts in some of the largest arenas and stadiums in the world David became the highest-paid performer by the age of 21.
David kept acting as well as singing and later starred in the original production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway and went on to break box office records in a production of Blood Brothers.
