Superstition… Mumbo Jumbo
Here is another amusing poem written by Tracey Curtis …
Superstition… Mumbo Jumbo
Can you remember way back when
When your mother used to say
Don’t cross upon the staircase
It’s bad luck, then walk away?
Or if you smash a mirror
It’s bad luck for seven years
She used to scare me half to death
At times I’d be in tears
I was sure I would be cursed
So I did the things she said
I didn’t walk under ladders
I’d walk around them all instead
And I would never tell a tale
As I knew my tongue would split
And all the little birds
Well, they’d want their little bit
I tried my best I really did
I hated telling lies
As she told me if I told a lie
Some little fairy dies
I always thought I’d hurt myself
upon the sticks and stones
She told me what these things could do
She said they’d break my bones
She only had one pair of hands
She said she couldn’t win
She told me if I picked my nose
My head would then cave in
I never stepped on the cracks
As it would break my mothers back
And it was fine to see a cat or two
As long as it wasn’t black
In the storm’s we’d cover mirrors
So we wouldn’t come to harm
And it used to freak me out
When my aunty read my palm
She’d say, “Keep your friends all close
But keep your enemies closer still”
And I shouldn’t have to cry
If the milk should tilt and spill
She’d say, only the good die young
So I thought the world was bad
You can see were I’m coming from
It’s a wonder I’m not mad
I waited for the pennies to fall
The one’s that come from heaven
But there you go what did I know
As I was only seven
Don’t look a Gift Horse In The Mouth
When you smile the world smiles too
All these things my mum would say
And some yes they are true
Don’t pull that face the wind will change
And then you’ll stick like that
I didn’t eat my crusts to curl my hair
Instead I wore a hat
She’d say, If you break your leg
Don’t come running back to me
We don’t put shoes on the tables
Superstition’s what I see
Turn that frown upside down
If you cry you cry alone
And people in glass houses
They should never throw a stone
Many hands make lighter work
What you eat is what you are
All these things my mum would say
I think some were bizarre
She’d say eat all your greens up
And then you will grow strong
But I didn’t eat my greens up
So I guess that’s what went wrong
Don’t cross your knife and fork
Don’t change your socks when inside out
Throwing salt across your shoulder
So what’s it all about
One magpie brings you sorrow
Two magpies brings you joy
Three magpies for the girls
And four magpies for the boy
Five magpies brings you silver
Six magpies brings you gold
It’s all just Mumbo Jumbo
That’s the secret that’s untold
Superstition Mumbo Jumbo or is it ???????????? lol
