Love is Still Alive
Martin Silvester has a knack of touching our hearts, and this poignant poem is no different from his others in that sense …
Love is Still Alive
Oh dear oh dear…it’s happening,
Emotions here again.
I want to know, why my teardrops flow,
Where can I put the blame?
When I was young I was always told,
That boys should never cry.
So I’d bite my lip and concentrate,
On keeping my cheeks dry.
On the whole I managed it,
Only cried when I got hurt.
Like the time I fell from the top of a tree,
And buried my face in the dirt.
But then I found as years passed by,
That tears don’t only flow.
When you bang your head or break a bone,
Or drop something on your toe.
My tap turns on for all sorts of things,
A sad movie or a song.
Or hurting someone’s feelings,
When I really get it wrong.
Sometimes it’s unrelated things,
Like people’s agony on the news.
I sit and watch and cry for them,
When things they love..they lose.
Heartbreak in relationships,
Or the loss of someone dear,
The pet that’s not there anymore,
Or sad things that I hear.
I much prefer my happy tears,
No sadness, only joy.
And there’s been a lot of happy tears,
Since I was just a boy.
A little hand in my big hand,
A grandchild fast asleep,
A great big hug from one you love,
Always makes me want to weep.
The trusting lick of a puppy dog,
A cats contented purr.
The feeling of peace, that you always get,
When you stroke their silken fur.
The happy ending of a film,
A poem or a book.
Sometimes a bit of lovely news,
Sometimes a loving look.
I’m so glad that I’m emotional,
When my feelings soar..or dive,
Which ever way my teardrops flow,
I know love…is still alive.
