When the Milkman brought the bread

This lovely poem is written by Tracey Curtis as she reminisces about the Milkman …

When the Milkman brought the bread

Today I went down to the shop
To get some food and drink in
I brought some bread some pop and milk
And then this got me thinking

I don’t know why I have to say
Why these things pop in my head
But it got me thinking of the days
When the milkman brought the bread

Can you remember way back when
When the milkman used to call
Our milkman was quite young I think
And quite chirpy as I recall

They would start their day so early
When most were in bed
They would drive a little milk float
Stacked up with milk and bread

Their milk floats ran on batteries
It had two leather seats
It bounced along on little wheels
As they drove around the streets

The back was flat and open
With it’s milk crates stacked on top
With bread, cheese, eggs and more
It was like a mobile shop

The milkmen seem so pleasant
When they knocked upon the door
They’d pay him what they owed him
So he could leave them more

I loved the gold milk bottle tops
And the cream that lay on top
The butter came in blocks back then
Much better than the shop

Some birds would peck the tops off
That was left out by the door
They would peck at all the bread
And smash the eggs upon the floor

The milkmen ran from house to house
Up and down the path they went
Leaving food in time for breakfast
With all such good intent

Oh yes them good old days
When the milkman use to say
Good morning mama and how are you?
Here’s your milk enjoy the day

Today it’s all so different
There’s no milk floats any more
And the milk would just get stolen
If you left it by your door

Unless your at a certain age
This tale won’t mean a thing
But for the older ones among us
Good memories it might bring

I don’t know why I thought of this
Why this popped inside my head
But I remember way back when
When the milkman brought the bread
