Who decides my fate?

This very poignant poem about the suffering children in war zones has been written by Suzanne Kelsey …

WHO DECIDES MY FATE?

I live in a terrifying war zone

Where all I learn is how to hate

My school has been destroyed

By the bombs who decide my fate

As I run my little heart is pounding

Dodging the bullets flying over my head

I am living the worst of nightmares

Family members lying bloodied and dead

I am separated from my parents

In the rubble I search for them in vain

But no one is able to help me

Our existence had become totally insane

On street corners infants pose with guns

Deeply traumatised and vulnerable

Dark eyes always full of tears and sadness

Whilst those who should protect us are culpable

I would love

To eat food with my family

I would love

To sleep in a comfortable and safe place

I would love

To feel content once again

I would love

To see my beautiful mother’s smiling face

There are thousands lost and abandoned like me

Who do not have a shred of hope

Who only understand the fear

Robbed of our right to a childhood

Where our innocence will quickly disappear

I wanted to be a doctor

To save lives and make people well

I wanted to make a difference

Instead I am living in this unimaginable hell

Please will someone stop the noise of suffering

Across the man-made barriers reach for a hand

Allow love to return to every single soul

And bring peace back to our homeland.

I am now (reluctantly) reitred from my work as a teacher/lecturer which has been a very long and happy career that focused on education, child development, dance, drama and teacher training. I was also a health and fitness tutor and contemporary dance teacher in my spare time! I love tai chi, photography, music, dance, theatre, reading, walking, mindfulness/meditation, social media and learning something new every day. I write poetry to raise money for good causes. I am passionate about campaigning for social justice and saving our NHS here in the UK. I also love my partner, my family and my friends and like to spend as much time with them as possible.
