Silver Sunday 2019 is coming!
Silver Sunday is a national day for celebrating older people with thousands of fun and free activities and events expected this October around the UK.
It is a day when everyone can come together to celebrate older people: a day in the nation’s hearts where older people feel valued and are given new opportunities to get out of the house, keep their minds and bodies active, learn new skills, make new friends and connect with the communities and generations around them.
Every year Silver Sunday gets bigger and better with 1,000 events last year as diverse as graffiti workshops, silent discos, tai chi, boat trips, walking football, a woodland elders’ circle – as well as many tea parties, music, dances, conversation and laughter.
This year Silver Sunday falls on 6th October with many events in the surrounding days and weeks. The Silver Sunday National Event Map is already filling up in venues including homes, community centres, libraries, fire stations, theatres and cultural institutions – and even Buckingham Palace. The aim is for 2019 to be the most multi-generational, inclusive, diverse and uplifting Silver Sunday ever with hundreds of new activities planned nationally, an ambition to reach 100,000 older people and partnerships with youth groups volunteering time and support.
There’s plenty of time to encourage your local community to get behind Silver Sunday. SilverSunday.org.uk is full of ideas, inspiration, toolkits, templates and other resources to make it as easy – and fun – to run Silver Sunday events and activities as possible. These are brilliant opportunities for individuals, groups and businesses to collaborate and share skills, time and resources to create memorable days and long lasting legacies for their older communities.
You can see what’s happening near you by visiting SilverSunday.org.uk and by following @SilverSundayUK on social media. Georgina Creighton from Silver Sunday would love to hear your plans and questions via [email protected] and see your events and activities come to life. Everyone is welcome!
