Over 50 Shades of Grey

What do you do when you see your first grey hair?

Do you pluck it?  Ignore it? Discreetly adjust your parting, the way you might surreptitiously introduce a rug to mask the imperfection on a carpet? And when the grey starts coming in fast and furious: Do you dye, highlight, or just accept it is a natural sign of ageing and go with it?

To date, modern science has not yet found a cure for grey hair. It is inevitable and part of the ageing process; some of us just turn grey in certain places on our heads such as by the temples, or above the forehead, whilst others become grey all over. The hair colouring business is massive, and if you don’t like your greys, you can either go to a professional colourist at your salon, or partake in some DIY at home.

Here are a few hair tips for  women over 50:

Try highlighting. A few strands of colour painted throughout hair can subtly hide grey hairs, especially if a woman’s natural hair colour is fairly light.

Full-blown colour. Women who want a solid, darker colour should realise it’s going to require regular maintenance as the colour grows out. If you don’t want a salon appointment every six to eight weeks, solid colours may not be for you.

Try a new style. Your personal preference should guide the style. But don’t feel compelled to go short just because you’ve turned 50. Long hair can be beautiful no matter what your age.

Fix thinning hair. A shorter cut gives more volume to thinning hair. Colour is also good for giving volume to fine, limp hair. Sometimes the right product, like a volumising shampoo, can solve the problem. Hair extensions can also help give a boost to thinning hair.

It may be worth looking online for a few tips and advice; Garnier have a whole section on grey coverage.
