The love bug!

Many of us have very fond memories of the Volkswagen Beetle.   In some ways its as iconic as the Mini; a car with real character and if you have owned one you never forget it.

My wife used to have a really old one back in the 1980’s and it would rattle along with that distinctive engine noise in the rear of the car. The inside was quite spartan with a basic tape deck as the sound system (remember them!). There was also that great Disney film in 1968 about a VW Beetle called The Love Bug and the follow-up in 1974, Herbie Rides Again; talk about a car having a personality!  Click on the picture above and reminisce!

Well Volkswagen has unveiled its newest Beetle which will go on sale in the UK in early 2013. It its instantly recognisable as a Beetle and looks terrific. It is slightly longer than the recent models by 15 centimetres and wider by 8 centimetres and its boot capacity has increased by 30% to 310 litres. Its also got its engine in the front and is front wheel driven and drivers will have a choice of four engines to choose from 1.2, 1.4 and 2.0 litre petrol and a 1.6 litre diesel which can return an amazing 65.7 mpg when on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 112g/km

The new Beetle looks very sporty and there are three different levels of trim; Beetle, design and Sport. Options available are a satnav, panoramic sunroof and daytime running lights. In addition the car has gained a 5 star safety rating.

So time to catch the Love Bug again!
