Sudeley Castle & Gardens
Set against the backdrop of the Cotswolds hills in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sudeley Castle & Gardens has played an important role in England’s history, boasting royal connections that stretch back over 1,000 years.
Inside, the castle contains many fascinating treasures from ancient Roman times to the present day. Outside, the castle is surrounded by award-winning gardens and a breathtaking 1,200-acre estate.
Explore one of the best Tudor castles in England
Tudor history at Sudeley is rich thanks to its royal connections and can be explored in greater detail through its many fascinating exhibitions.
Of all the Tudor castles in the country, Sudeley is the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within the grounds. The last of Henry VIII’s six wives, Katherine Parr, lived and died at Sudeley, where she still remains today entombed in a beautiful 15th century church found within the grounds.
Visit the most historic gardens in the Cotswolds
There are a number of gardens near Gloucester, but none so beautifully designed as Sudeley’s ten award-winning gardens. The centrepiece is the Queens Garden, so named because four of England’s queens – Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I – once admired the hundreds of varieties of roses found here.
Each of the gardens contains a plethora of Cotswold flowers. Visit these in the Secret Garden, the Mulberry Garden and the Herb Garden Walk. In the Mulberry Garden, country flowers and cool greenery surrounds the mulberry tree planted in 1865 by Emma Dent. The Herb Garden Walk takes visitors through a fine collection of plants which have been cultivated for their medical properties for thousands of years – even though many are poisonous.
