Planting ahead
Even in the colder months of the year, there is lots of planning ahead to do.
With this in mind, it’s a good time to start ordering any seed catalogues for potential bedding and perennial ideas. There is also the opportunity, if not done already, to buy in bulbs that flower in the summer, so they are ready to plant either during the winter or spring months. The preparation doesn’t stop there for next year’s blooms, this month is the prime time to plant bulbs such as lilies and tulips either in pots or as part of bedding to naturally grow. It’s also the last chance to prepare and plant winter bedding such as Bellis, Viola or even wallflowers to add a bit of variety in the garden.
Problem areas
Within the course of the month it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for any problems that can arise and deal with them effectively. Prevent downy mildew on brassicas and grey mould on Brussels sprouts by removing any yellowing leaves. Help vegetable plots thrive by removing plant debris, but do make sure you dispose of diseased material rather than compost. To keep stored fruit healthy, regularly remove any rotting fruit especially with apples and pears, as diseases such as canker and bitter pit can occur. Another problem to keep watch for is rodents, which can potentially damage newly sowed plots and crops, as well as stored nuts and fruits.
