Patio Black Spot removal
It’s something we’ve all struggled with, how on earth do you get rid of those ugly black spots that spread all over your patio? Two readers have struggled with just that, so we asked patio cleaning expert, Simon Essex to answer their questions.
Q: Hi, Our patio is looking really dirty. Should we power wash it or use a chemical cleaner?
Power washing is an acceptable short-term solution to a dirty patio, but it also could lead to more problems further down the line.
Power washing will remove the surface dirt, from stone. However, when older than 3 years, instead of revealing a sparkling new patio, it will start to reveal ugly ‘black spots’, caused by microscopic lichen spores, that no amount of pressure washing can remove. Feeding off the minerals in the stone, lichen spores not only grow across the face of stonework but put down fibrous roots, anchoring themselves like limpets into the stone and then blooming on the surface as black spots; at which point power washing becomes futile. Further pressure washing can then dislodge the pointing and cause damage to the surface of the stone, leaving it porous and susceptible to frost damage.
Q: Can you recommend a patio cleaning product I can buy in garden centres that actually works?
With the average cost of laying a new patio between £130 and £150 per square metre, a new patio in a four-bedroom house can cost upwards of £5,000. This is a major investment and many people see it deteriorate after as little as 3 years, as the lichen spores grow and take hold.
Chemical cleaning, with a biodegradable and pet-friendly product, which kills the roots of the lichen, is a preferred long-term solution. Some chemical cleaners are better than others, but you get what you pay for!
