Looking to autumn in the Garden with the RHS
As August heads into September, the days get shorter but the days are still warm. And if you have a fruit or vegetable garden you’ll be busy harvesting. But there are some other jobs to get on with – now’s the time to plant spring flowering bulbs for next year. Why not try naturalising bulbs – so you will be able to appreciate drifts of daffodils, snowdrops and crocus in your lawn or other grassy areas.
Up the apples and pears
Harvesting top fruit such as apples and pears begins in earnest in September. Look for fruit falling under the tree (windfalls) to indicate which apples are ready, but also assess taste and texture to determine whether they are ready for harvesting. Quince and medlars are also picked now. If your fruit isn’t quite ready to pick, start looking out some new recipes for jams, chutneys, cider and so on, so you’re prepared when the harvest starts. This is also a good time to order new fruit trees, canes and bushes.

Surrey Sculpture Society Trail –
Head along to RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey to enjoy beautiful works of sculpture from across the South East. The sculpture trail runs from August 24 to September 29, and includes contemporary and traditional sculpture. There are more than 60 pieces on show and all of them are available to buy.
Wisley is also the venue for the Wisley Flower Show. Running from September 4 to 8, this is a late-summer show featuring more than 40 garden trade and specialist nursery stands. Also look out for spectacular floral displays by Surrey NAFAS, and new for 2013, the National Dahlia Society Show is bringing together more than 100 exhibitors showing the best in dahlia cultivation. There will be vibrant displays of decorative, cactus, semi-cactus, ball and pompon dahlias in every colour, apart from the elusive blue.
