A new Europe wide law is about to come into force in the UK extending the copyright protection for original iconic furniture designs from 25 to 70 years.
Originally, the change in UK law was to be implemented in 2020. Unfortunately, the government bowed to legal pressure from official makers of iconic designs earlier this year and brought forward the change in law to January 31st 2017, after which it will be illegal to sell or buy any form of iconic replica.

Versions of the Eames Lounger that are currently available for less than £500, will be banned, meaning people would have to pay £5,000 for an original. Businesses that sell replica furniture could become liable to a potential fine of up to £50,000, and a custodial sentence of up to 10 years.
Even design experts claim the original designs were meant to be enjoyed by the masses and not just the privileged few who can afford to pay a premium.
