Keep warm as Christmas draws near
You’re probably missing the sunshine about now, as rain, winds and frost become more common – but the good news is that there’s not too much to do outside, so you can stay indoors and enjoy looking at your seed catalogues or planning your garden design for next year.
But do make sure all your plants are well protected against the elements and that if you have a greenhouse the heater is working. One job you should do now is to prune your apple and pear trees.
Looking after the lawn
Even if you’re not outside much, it’s worth keeping an eye on your lawn – remember to keep removing fallen leaves as they can block out moisture and light. You can repair any edges that are damaged using turves that you cut from other parts of the garden – and this is also a good time to re-cut your lawn edges. Do remember not to walk on the grass if it is frosty – you’ll end up with brown ‘footprints’ all over the lawn! If you need to walk across your lawn a lot at this time of year to get to a washing line, play area or greenhouse, it might be worth laying stepping stones to avoid damage. Lay them just below grass level and they won’t interfere with mowing. Areas of inadequate drainage, lots of shade and where the rain drips off trees can fall victim to algae – keep an eye out for problems.
