Give your garden a wake up
Whether you have yours as soon as you get up, at eleven o’clock on the dot, or simply spread throughout the day, there’s no denying a cup of coffee is a delicious, if sometimes essential, part of our daily routines.
But did you know that you could do even more with the grounds from your daily fresh cup?
Used coffee grounds are an excellent source of nitrogen for your garden, which is something it needs to encourage plant growth. Coffee grounds can also encourage the growth of microorganisms, and it’s also said to attract earthworms to the soil, which subsequently create tunnels that leave space for air and water to get to the plant roots.
How to use used coffee grounds
Once they’ve cooled, you can add your used coffee grounds directly onto the soil around your plants. This adds organic matter to your planting area, which in turn improves the soil’s water retention.
You can also add the grounds to your compost rather than adding them directly to your garden if you’d prefer.
If you’re not a coffee drinker
Even if you don’t drink coffee yourself, you can still benefit from this gardening technique. You can head to your nearest Morrisons Cafe and pick up a bag of the used grounds to take home for free – simply ask behind the counter and our friendly cafe team will be happy to help, meaning you can perk up your plants and also help reduce food waste at the same time.
