Gardening Tips for June from the RHS
It’s really starting to feel like summer now, but with the longer days and warmer weather comes the problem of weeds, which have their ideal growing conditions.
Keep on top of weed control, so that they dont become a problem later in the summer.
Other gardening jobs this month include:
• Tackle weeds by hoeing borders regularly
• Be aware of water consumption – keep water butts filled and collect as much rainwater as possible. Use grey water from baths and washing up.
• To make tomato plants stronger, pinch out the sideshoots
• It’s time to harvest radish, salads and early potatoes
• Risk of frost should be passed, so you can put out containers and hanging baskets
• Keep on top of the lawn by mowing once a week at least
Get sowing outside
Now that the risk of frost has passed and the soil is warming up, you can start sowing seeds direct into the ground. Prepare your beds and you can sow all kinds of goodies, such a sweetcorn (in more southerly areas), squash, cucumbers, broad beans, runner beans, French beans and peas. When sowing sweetcorn, remember that they work best planted in blocks, with 45cm (218in) between each hole – plant two seeds in each hole. Young plants can also be planted out now in the same pattern.
Real Ale and cider festivals
Several RHS gardens are hosting Real Ale and Cider Festivals on June 7 and 8. As well as a chance to try some unusual beers and ciders, you can also find out more about home brewing with demonstrations and talks, follow the beer trails and then take time out to play giant garden games. The festivals are taking place at RHS Harlow Carr, RHS Hyde Hall and RHS Rosemoor.
Challenge Dad this Father’s Day!
There’s lots of fun for dads and granddads at the RHS gardens on June 14 and 15 for Father’s Day. At RHS Harlow Carr there’s a chance to take on an orienteering challenge, while at Wisley survival skills such as den making and camouflage will be put to the test. As a reward, book a weekend family brunch in the Restaurant. On June 15 at RHS Hyde Hall there are survival skills workshops – and then you can all enjoy lunch in the Barn Restaurant, while at RHS Rosemoor a self-guided trail puts plenty of challenges your way.
