Dazzling Dutch bulbs direct from Holland

Product review

DutchGrown bulbs is operated by two brothers, Ben and Pete who are the 4th generation in their family to sell flower bulbs and their business is located in the heart of the flower bulb district in Holland.

They kindly gave some bulbs to the Silversurfers team and as you can see from the photos they are absolutely magnificent!

Ordering autumn planted bulbs far in advance is key to securing the best varieties and will give the best discounts. Autumn is also the best time to plant bulbs like Tulips (You cannot plant Tulips in spring or summer). Many DutchGrown bulb customers also plant their bulbs in November and some even as late as December. It is best to plant the autumn planted bulbs when the night temperatures drop below 10 to 12C as the bulbs like the cooler soil.

When customers receive their bulbs in the autumn it’s best to plant them immediately. If gardeners prefer to wait a few weeks, this is fine but it is very important to open up the box so the bulbs can get fresh air. They are alive and breathe just like humans!

DutchGrown stock more than 135 different tulip varieties! Each year they visit the growers in Holland to look for novelties. Sometimes it can take 1-3 years before a variety they really like gets released to them!

Some flower bulbs come back every year, some do not. Daffodils for example are great for naturalising (coming back each year and multiplying). Tulips in general are not perennials. With the “Darwin Tulips” you have the biggest chance of them coming back.

A flower bulb is really a self-contained flower factory. Within this marvellous little package is nearly everything the flower needs to come to life! Split a tulip open, for instance, and you’ll see its baby flower bud, leaves, roots, stem and food supply.

The three most important factors to keep in mind to think of when buying flower bulbs are colour, of course, but also plant height and flowering period.

DutchGrown are very easy to grow: Most bulbs thrive in either full or partial sun and in almost any location with good drainage. It’s best to avoid planting at the base of hills or under drainpipes where water collects and will rot the bulbs. The same rule applies when planting in pots: always make sure you have plenty of drainage.

If you would like to purchase fabulous flower bulbs from Holland then DutchGrown begins accepting pre-orders each year from 1st March onwards. The shipping season usually ends by the end of November when most bulbs are sold out.

As a newsletter subscriber you have a chance to win a trip to Holland and visit the famous Keukenhof Park.

DutchGrown also has its own show garden where its entire assortment is blooming in spring.
