Preventing falls this winter
Many older people feel vulnerable during winter; wet weather and cold temperatures make falls more likely, which can have serious complications.
Don’t let the fear of falling keep you indoors. By making a few precautions around the home you can step out feeling confident.
Grit your walkways
Clear a path around any walkways at your home and be sure to grit with salt or sand to help give traction and minimise the chance of slipping on snow or ice.
Choose a clear day
Don’t take unnecessary risks – if the weather is poor and you’re already unsteady on your feet, it’s best to wait for a dry, clear day where sunlight means there’s good visibility.
Choose proper footwear
When you’re leaving the house, make sure you’re wearing proper footwear – a sturdy pair of winter boots that offer ankle support and plenty of grip on the sole will help reduce the risk of slipping and falling. If you have a favourite pair of shoes you want to wear throughout winter, take them to a cobbler to see if you can add a sole with better grip.
Use a mobility aid
Many older adults resist mobility aids, but they can help you maintain your freedom and independence, and also help you feel safe and confident. Even if you’re usually steady on your feet, walking with a cane or walking stick, or using a walker, will help you to keep your balance as much as possible.
Install handles
Grab handles outside your front steps will help you and any visitors to your home keep their balance – particularly if the stone of your walkway is known to get icy.
Remember your glasses
Don’t leave home without your glasses – seeing well is a part of good balance.
Wear gloves
You’re more likely to lose your balance if your hands are in your pockets. Always use gloves so you can keep your hands at your sides – it will help you balance better and also means your hands are free to break your fall should the worst happen. When you’re walking outdoors, try to avoid carrying anything unnecessary so you can keep your hands free.
Exercise
Regular movement and exercise will help keep you steady on your feet whatever the time of year. Even if you’re not leaving the home, make sure to walk regularly and do exercise to help keep your strength up.
