How to keep your Valentine’s roses lasting longer
There’s nothing more disappointing than receiving a beautiful bouquet of Valentine’s roses, only for them to wilt within days.
However, with the right care, you can extend their lifespan and enjoy their beauty for much longer. Here are some tried-and-tested tips to keep your roses fresh and vibrant.
1. Trim the stems
As soon as you receive your roses, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle using sharp scissors or secateurs. This allows better water absorption. Repeat this every couple of days to prevent blockages that can hinder hydration.
2. Remove excess leaves
Leaves submerged in water can encourage bacterial growth, which speeds up the wilting process. Remove any leaves that sit below the waterline in your vase.
3. Use a clean vase and fresh water
Bacteria and mould thrive in dirty water. Wash your vase thoroughly before filling it with fresh, lukewarm water. Change the water every two days to keep it clean and free of bacteria.
4. Add flower food
Many bouquets come with a sachet of flower food – use it! If you don’t have any, you can make your own by adding a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach or vinegar to the water. This provides nourishment while preventing bacteria from growing.
5. Keep them cool
Roses last longer in a cool environment, so avoid placing them near radiators, direct sunlight, or electronic devices that emit heat. Keeping them away from fruit can also help, as ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up wilting.
6. Mist the petals
Lightly misting the petals with water can help keep them hydrated and fresh. Be careful not to overdo it, as too much moisture can encourage mould.
7. Revive wilting roses
If your roses start to droop, submerge the entire stem in lukewarm water for an hour. This rehydrates them and often brings them back to life. Another trick is to recut the stems and place them in hot water for a few minutes before transferring them back to fresh, cool water.
By following these simple steps, you can prolong the beauty of your Valentine’s roses and enjoy them for much longer. With a little extra care, your bouquet can continue to brighten your home and remind you of that special romantic moment.
