Clever uses for olive oil

A good olive oil is a staple for any household, and it has plenty of uses that stretch beyond salads and stir frys.

From a makeshift shaving cream to a furniture polish, there’s plenty of alternative ways you can put your bottle to good use. Here’s a few of our favourite clever uses.

Hair conditioner

Keep your hair smooth and healthy in between visits to the salon by using olive oil. Brush olive oil through your hair and leave overnight, or leave it on around the house and wash out towards the end of the day.

Remove sticky substances

If you have sticky substances lingering on spoons and measuring tools, or even from stickers on glass gars, this will help remove it. Apply with a cloth and rub gently until the residue is gone.

Make a herb mix

Save time with cooking by adding a mix of herbs to an ice cube tray – oregano, sage and rosemary for example – then top up with olive oil and freeze. Then you can simply add it to a frying pan when you’re ready to cook next for a perfectly seasoned mix.

Makeshift shaving cream

Olive oil can be a great alternative to traditional shaving creams – it’s inexpensive, moisturising, and gives a very close shave.

Banish squeaking hinges

Olive oil is a great alternative to a can of WD40 and will get the job done just as well. Put a drop or two into any squeaking hinges or drawers that stick. Rub in gently by opening and closing the door or drawer.

Remove grease from hands

if you have car grease or paint on your hands, put some olive oil into the palm of your hand, sprinkle with salt, then rub together. Follow with soap and water; the grease will be gone and your hands will feel soft and smooth, too.

Furniture polish

You can restore some of the shine from your old furniture using a mixture of two parts olive oil and one-part lemon juice. Apply onto a paper towel and rub into the furniture. Then, using a clean cloth or paper towel, rub to remove any excess residue.
