Clever uses for nail files
A sturdy nail file has plenty of practical uses beyond smoothing your nails.
Here are a few of our favourite clever uses for nail files – how many will you put to good use?
Sharpen tweezers
Like any sharp-ended object, over time tweezers can become dull and more difficult to use. You can use a nail file to sharpen your tweezers using a nail file or emery board. Close your tweezers around the nail file and then pull it out in different directions.
Prep seeds
Most seeds are coated to help them last longer and ensure they can survive before being purchased and planted. Use a nail file to gently buff away the coating – seeds will absorb water faster and begin to sprout with ease.
Touch up your suede shoes
Suede is notoriously difficult to clean, but you can handle small stains and scuffs with this simple tip. Use a nail file to lightly buff away the stain. Next, place it over the spout of your boiling kettle – the steam will finish the job without damaging the suede.
Smooth rough edges
Occasionally a much-used household item made from wood, plastic or even glass will get a small chip. You can smooth down the sharp edge by gently buffing with a nail file.
Sharpen sewing needles
In the same way you can sharpen tweezers, you can use a nail file to sharpen small objects like sewing needles if they become dull. Gentle pull the nail file across the edge of the needle in one direction several times, then repeat in the opposite direction. This also works with blades and knives, too.
Remove super glue
If you’ve ever fixed a delicate item using super glue, you are probably familiar with the feeling of getting glue on your fingers. Rub it away gently using a nail file. It’s quick, simple and pain-free.
Sharpen lip liner
If you have a favourite eyeliner or lip liner that’s gone dull and don’t have a sharpener to hand, a nail file will work just as well. Gently run the edge of your liner along the nail file to bring it back to a sharp point.
