Clever uses for Epsom salts
Epsom salts are a simple and inexpensive way to upgrade an evening soak in the bath, but if that’s all you use them for you’re missing a trick.
There are dozens of clever uses for Epsom salts you can use around the home. Here are a few of our favourites:
Wash dishes
You can help break down grease and build-up on your hard-to-clean dishes faster by adding some Epsom salts to the bottom of the pan. Let it soak for a few minutes then wash as usual.
As a natural body scrub
Instead of buying fancy – and expensive – body scrubs to exfoliate your skin, try this trick instead. Add a spoonful of Epsom salt to your favourite body wash and wash as normal. Or give your skin a good scrub by rubbing it into damp skin, then wiping away.
Revive your lawn
If your lawn is looking a little worse for the wear and you don’t want to use chemical plant foods, Epsom salt might be the perfect alternative. Dissolve in your watering bucket and water the lawn – the salt will help raise the pH levels in your soil.
As a weed killer
Or, if you’re struggling with weeds, use Epsom salts to create your own weed killer. Mix equal parts water and vinegar then add Epsom salt and a small amount of washing up liquid. Mix thoroughly then pour into a bottle, then spray.
Soothe sunburn
Epsom salts have anti-inflammatory properties, so can help relieve your sunburn. Mix some salts into water, then saturate a face cloth and soak the affected area. It also works on insect bites!
As a natural laxative
Epsom salt is a great gentle laxative to relieve constipation. Add a teaspoon to a glass of water and drink. Beware – it tastes very bitter!
