Clever uses for dental floss
If you have dental floss gathering dust in your medicine cabinet, fear not – there’s plenty of other clever uses that have nothing to do with teeth.
Here’s a few of our favourites
Fix your eyeglasses
If you ever lose one of the tiny screws that connect the arms of your eyeglasses to the frame, dental floss will allow you to wear them until you can take them in to be fixed or replaced. Thread the floss through the holes where the screw would normally be. Tie firmly then cut off the excess.
Support climbing plants
Floss is durable yet lightweight – perfect for tying climbing plants to doweling to help support them while they are still growing.
Remove sticky photos
If you have old photos you want to remove from an adhesive photo album, rather than pulling and potentially ruining them, try this simple trick instead. Take a piece of dental floss and slide it between the picture and the album page. It will left and separate easily.
Remove cookies from a tray
If you’ve made cookies and they’re stuck to the baking tray, you can use dental floss in the same way you would to remove a photo – slide between the tray and the cookie to separate without damaging.
Cut dough and more
You can cut dough like cinnamon rolls into even pieces without damaging it by using dental floss in the same way you would a cheese wire. Place carefully underneath the dough and then pull the two ends towards you as if you were going to tie them together. It will slice through the dough evenly. This also works well with fruit, cheese, hard boiled eggs and even removing skin from fish.
Line dry clothing
If you’re away on holiday and need to wash and dry your underwear or favourite t-shirt in a pinch, you can turn the bathroom into a makeshift laundry room. Wash your items by hand and then string dental floss between two stationary objects and hang your clothes to dry. Good strong dental floss is tough enough to carry the weight of wet clothing.
String garland
This is a great trick for the upcoming festive season – if you like to make garland from popcorn or cranberries, use dental floss as your string. It fits easily through a sewing needle and is clean and safe for food.
