Clever uses for cream of tartar
Cream of tartar is one of those magic ingredients cooks keep in their kitchen cupboards to make meringues stand high and cookies taste fluffy and delicious.
But there’s plenty of other uses for this kitchen wonder that have nothing to do with baking.
Here’s our favourite clever uses for cream of tartar.
Polish metal and stainless steel
If you have stainless steel or metal appliances that have seen better days, quickly clean them by sprinkling some cream of tartar powder over a wet sponge. The citric acid helps breakdown any build up.
Simple stain remover
Cream of tartar is also a great stain remover on white shirts, particularly for stains around the collar. Sprinkle the powder into the stain then launder as usual. For tough stains, make a paste using lemon juice and cream of tarter. Rub into the stain and let it sit for a couple of hours before washing.
Polish silver
Bring your silver back to its original shine by scrubbing gently with a soft bristled toothbrush, and a paste made from a few drops of water and cream of tartar.
Fix scratched dishes
If your everyday dinner plates have scratches from utensils, try this simple trick. Sprinkle a tablespoon of cream of tartar onto the dish and rub in with a damp cloth. The scratches will fade and disappear.
Save a burnt frying pan
If food has burned badly into your favourite frying pan or pot, you can use this tried-and-tested trick. At the bottom of the pan add washing up liquid, cream of tartar and baking soda and rub in with a sponge. Leave to soak, then use a hard-edged piece of plastic – an old store card is perfect – to gently scrape away any residue without scratching your pan.
All purpose cleaner
You can create a simple all-purpose cleaner that works on everything from grout to ovens and sinks using vinegar and cream of tartar. It even tackles mould.
Keep veggies looking vibrant
If you want to help your cooked vegetables look vibrant at your next dinner party, this is a great trick. Add half a teaspoon of cream of tartar to your pot when boiling vegetables; it will help them retain their colour.
